The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1978 began on April 11, 1978 and ended on May 25, 1978 with the Canadiens de Montréal's 4-2 victory over the Boston Bruins . The Canadiens thus won their third Stanley Cup in a row and the 21st in their franchise history . In addition, they put in Larry Robinson to the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of this post-season , which together with Guy Lafleur led the scorers list of the playoffs. For the Bruins, on the other hand, who had failed in the final at the Canadiens last year (0: 4), it was the third final defeat in a row. Furthermore, the meeting of the two teams marked the first direct re-edition of a final series since 1969 (Montréal against St. Louis ), while this was to happen again six years later ( 1984 : Edmonton against New York ).

While the Detroit Red Wings reached the playoffs for the first time in seven years, the California Golden Seals / Cleveland Barons franchise expanded its negative streak to eight seasons without participation in the post-season , thus equalizing the current NHL record of the Boston Bruins (1960 to 1967 without participation in the playoff).

mode

The twelve teams qualified for the playoffs were placed on the seeding list according to their performance in the regular season (most points; most wins in the event of a tie). However, the four division winners were set by bye for the quarter-finals, while the remaining eight participants played a preliminary round. In all rounds, the pairings were determined by the seeding list, so the highest seeded team met the lowest seeded team, number two met the penultimate team, etc.

The series of the preliminary round were played in the best-of-three mode, the series in all subsequent rounds in the best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needed four wins to progress from the quarter-finals; only two in the first round. The higher-ranked team had - from the second round - home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. In the preliminary round, however, the home law changed from game to game.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
