René Paul Robert (born December 31, 1948 in Trois-Rivières , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played a total of twelve seasons between 1970 and 1982 for the Buffalo Sabers , Colorado Rockies and the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League .
Career
Robert's career spanned a total of 744 NHL games, in which he scored 284 goals and contributed 418 assists and a total of 702 points. He had his most productive time in the 1974/75 season , in which he was able to achieve 40 goals and 60 assists.
In his youth he played for the Trois-Rivieres Leafs in his hometown and was signed by the Toronto Maple Leafs during this time . He spent the first three years of his professional career in lower-class leagues, including a. for the Tulsa Oilers , Rochester Americans and Vancouver Canucks . During the Inter-League Draft in June 1971, the Buffalo Sabers got the rights to Robert, but was not signed and ended up with the Pittsburgh Penguins . There he brought it to 18 points scorer in 49 NHL games before he was transferred to Buffalo for Eddie Shack .
The best years of his career were to follow in Buffalo, when he formed The French Connection in a storm series with Gilbert Perreault and Rick Martin . On October 5, 1979, Robert was transferred from the then manager of the Sabers, Scotty Bowman, to the Colorado Rockies for defenseman John Van Boxmeer - with that the French connection was ended forever. In the Rockies he was the team captain in the 1979/80 season. After two seasons in Colorado, Robert returned to Toronto and ended his career at the end of the 1981/82 season .
After his resignation, he became president of the NHL Alumni Association. His number 14 is no longer assigned by the Sabers (retired, November 15, 1995 together with Rick Martin) and hangs together with the other two members of the French Connection under the roof of the HSBC Arena .
