The KeyBank Center is a multi-purpose hall in the US city ​​of Buffalo , New York State . The KeyBank Center on the Buffalo River in Downtown Buffalo opened on September 21, 1996, replacing the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium from 1940. Initially the arena was called Crossroads Arena , but the name was changed to Marine Midland Arena even before the first game took place. as Marine Midland Bank (part of the HSBC banking group) became a name sponsor . In 1999 the name was changed to HSBC Arena . In the same year the first college basketball tournament was held. The arena offers space for up to 19,200 spectators, depending on the event. On August 25, 2011, the Buffalo Sabers announced that the arena would be named First Niagara Center after the First Niagara Bank. The contract period is 15 years.

In September 2016 the name of the arena was officially changed to KeyBank Center . The background to this is the takeover of First Niagara Bank by KeyCorp or its financial institution KeyBank .

Incidents

On November 16, 1996, a few minutes after the end of a training session, the eight-sided video cube fell from the ceiling of the hall. Nobody was injured, but the game between the Sabers and the Boston Bruins , set a few hours later, had to be postponed.
