The Little Caesars Arena is a multi-purpose arena in the US city of Detroit in the state of Michigan . It is since September 2017, the new venue of Hockey - Franchise of the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The arena offers 20,000 seats for ice hockey games. When playing the Pistons there are up to 21,000 places.

history

From 1979 the Red Wings played their games in the Joe Louis Arena . In July 2014, initial plans for a new event venue called the Detroit Events Center were unveiled. The cost of the sports arena was put at 450 million US dollars. About 40 percent of the amount will be borne by the real estate company Olympia Entertainment, Inc. owned by Mike Ilitch , owner of the Detroit Red Wings. The rest is covered by public funds. As the owner, the city will rent the hall to the franchises on a long-term basis.

The laying of the foundation stone on September 25, 2014 was celebrated by fans and local residents in the presence of Michigan's Governor Rick Snyder and Mayor Mike Duggan . The event hall is a part of the planned sports and entertainment district The District Detroit , which also includes the Ford Field of the Detroit Lions and Comerica Park of the Detroit Tigers heard. The district will consist of 50 blocks of houses, shops, parks, restaurants, bars and event venues and will connect the fallow area between Downtown Detroit and Uptown Detroit.

The event arena offers some special features. The rows of seats have been lowered and the ice surface is 12 meters below street level. The facilities such as shops, offices, ticket sales centers, fan shops, restaurants and stands for food and drinks will be outsourced. They are created around the hall. The path covered with a glass roof can be used like a pedestrian zone. It will be open all year round, even if there is no event in the arena. On April 29, 2016, it was announced that the hall will in future bear the name of the Little Caesars fast-food pizza restaurant chain , which is owned by the Ilitch family.

As early as March 2016, the Detroit News polled its readers for a name for the new arena. The majority voted for the building to be named after “Mr. Hockey " Gordie Howe , who ran from 1946 to 1971 for the Detroit Red Wings, to name. Contrary to the first pictures of the Little Caesars Arena, the roof is not illuminated with LEDs . It receives the logo of the fast-food chain. After Gordie Howe died on June 10, 2016 at the age of 88, fans demanded that the new home of the ice hockey team be renamed Gordie Howe Arena .

With the Detroit Pistons , a second main tenant has been found for the Little Caesars Arena. On November 22nd, 2016, Tom Gores, owner of the Pistons , Christopher Ilitch, President and CEO of Ilitch Holdings, Inc., and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced that the Detroit Pistons from the National Basketball Association (NBA) announced their previous venue, the Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills , around 55 kilometers from Detroit, and will move to the Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit. The Pistons are returning to the city after 39 years after moving out of the Cobo Center in 1978.

The costs of the construction project have increased significantly over the course of the year. According to figures from November 2016, the new building will cost 732.6 million US dollars. This is another increase of $ 105 million. As early as November 2015, the sum rose to 627 million US dollars and a further increase was feared. In 2014, a sum of 450 million US dollars was assumed. In May 2017, construction costs were $ 862.9 million. This means that the costs have almost doubled.

On January 5, 2017, work on the construction of the ice surface began with the excavation of the construction pit. According to the operating company Olympia Development , more than 1,000 workers are working three shifts six days a week in order to be able to open the hall in September.

The official opening of the Little Ceasars Arena took place on September 5, 2017.

On October 8, 2017, the WWE Hell in a Cell wrestling event took place in the arena . As part of the NHL game against the Vegas Golden Knights (0: 4) on March 8, 2018, the two millionth visitor to the Little Caesars Arena since it opened on September 5, 2017 was welcomed. The visitor received u. a. a signed jersey, two tickets to a Detroit Tigers ( MLB ) baseball game and two tickets to a Bruno Mars concert, as well as free pizza from Little Caesars for one year.

On October 8, 2018, it was announced that the currently red seats will be replaced by black seats from December of that year. When the Detroit Pistons decided to move to the new arena, the design of the facility was complete or in production. So the Little Caesars Arena should also become more of the home of the Pistons .

In November 2018, Google moved 100 employees into offices in the Little Caesars Arena. The regional center was previously located in the suburb of Birmingham .
