The Gila River Arena is a multi-purpose arena in Glendale , a suburb of Phoenix , Arizona . It is the home of the NHL team Arizona Coyotes and the Arizona Sting from the National Lacrosse League . The arena was completed in 2003 and cost a total of approximately 180 million US dollars . The official capacity for ice hockey and lacrosse games is 17,799 spectators.

use

In December 2003, the Coyotes moved from their previous home stadium, the America West Arena (now Talking Stick Resort Arena ), to the newly opened Glendale Arena . The main reason for the move was the fact that the America West Arena , home of the NBA team Phoenix Suns , was designed primarily for basketball and that many places had poor visibility when playing ice hockey.

When the Coyotes were sold to the Steve Ellman Group , construction began on a new ice hockey stadium for the Coyotes. Two years late, the Glendale Arena opened on December 26, 2003, in the middle of the 2003/04 NHL season , with the lacrosse game of the Arizona Sting against the Vancouver Ravens . The first NHL game took place the very next evening when the Coyotes defeated the Nashville Predators 3-1.

In early 2005 the arena hosted the unique February Frenzy , an Arizona State High School sporting event that combined basketball , wrestling and cheerleading competitions into one mega-event.

In August 2014 the hall was given a new sponsor name. The casino operator Gila River Casinos signed a nine-year partnership with the Arizona Coyotes, which also includes the naming rights . The Gila River Arena officially bears the name since September 10, 2014. The city of Glendale receives 600,000 US dollars a year for this.

Due to the upcoming renovation of the Talking Stick Resort Arena, the Arizona Rattlers will play temporarily in the Gila River Arena from 2020. They had previously played individual playoff games there.
