Rumhold

Rumhold († June 20, 941 ) was the eighth bishop of Munster from 922 until his death .

Life

Rumhold probably comes from an originally Franconian family that was given property by the Carolingians in conquered Saxony. He belongs to the environment from which the gentlemen von Plessen and the Haolde later emerged. This group had been related to the Liudolfingers since the beginning of the 9th century . Rumold was probably a relative of his predecessor Nithard .

Nothing is known about his years prior to his appointment as bishop. Immediately after his predecessor left the bishopric in Münster, Rumhold followed him. He owed his appointment to Heinrich I, who was related to him . He also supported his politics.

Tradition tells of a great comet at the beginning of his reign. In fact, such a 923, 925 or 928 was visible. The sky spectacle fell in an unusually harsh winter and the country was once again devastated by the Hungarians. In the memory of the diocese, he endeavored to achieve peace and care for the poor and the sick. He settled his predecessors' dispute with the cathedral chapter and the pen nobility . Rumhold has given the chapter the large sum of 48 pounds of gold. The canons donated the gold to an annual atonement that was celebrated until the 15th century. The foundation was then converted into a cash benefit.

Rumhold was present at the great synod of Erfurt in 932. Heinrich I also took part in this. For the later years of the king there is no evidence of Rumhold's participation in such events. However, this may also have something to do with the fact that there are no lists of participants. So it is also unclear whether Rumold took part in Otto I's election as king . It is also uncertain whether he would have brought relics from Italy to Magdeburg on behalf of the king.
