The Amway Center is a multi-purpose hall in the US city of Orlando in the state of Florida . It has been the new home of Orlando Magic since the 2010/11 NBA season , replacing the Amway Arena, which was built in 1989 . The Orlando Solar Bears from the ECHL have also been using the hall as their home ground since the 2012/13 season . From 2011 to 2013, the Orlando Predators ( AFL ) arena football team also played their games indoors . The lease was terminated in September 2013 due to the low average attendance. Instead of the contractually stipulated number of 6,000 visitors, an average of only 5,878 came. After a change of ownership and a season in the CFE Arena, they returned to the Amway Center.
Part of the sponsorship deal with Amway for the former Amway Arena was a right of first refusal for the name of a new arena. In August 2009, the details of the new contract were announced. With a view to the Downtown Master Plan , the Orlando Magic , led by the owner and founder of Amway Richard DeVos and son-in-law Bob Vander Weide, urged the city of Orlando to build a new multi-purpose hall for the then approximately ten-year-old Amway Arena . It was created before the generation of ultra-modern arenas that were completed in the US in the 1990s . The Amway Arena has quickly become the oldest NBA venue . At the end of the 1990s, the team threatened to move to another city. So were Kansas City , Las Vegas and Oklahoma City for discussion, this plan was dropped again.
On September 29, 2006, after long negotiations, Orlando's Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County 's Mayor Richard Crotty and Orlando Magic announced an agreement to build a new multi-purpose arena. The construction is located on the northwest corner between Church Street and Hughey Avenue in Downtown Orlando . The financial framework included 380 million dollars for the hall, and additional US $ 100 million for the land and infrastructure. This resulted in a total volume of 480 million US dollars. Overall, the renovation of the Orlando Centroplex is estimated at 1.05 billion US dollars. In addition to the arena, 375 million US dollars were planned for the new cultural center and the expansion and renovation of the Florida Citrus Bowl with 175 million US dollars. Due to the financial crisis , the construction work on the Florida Citrus Bowl was postponed to 2020 at the earliest.
Construction began on July 25, 2008. The building was designed by the Populous architects in collaboration with Smith, Seckman & Reid and Walter P. Moore. On October 1, 2010, the new home of the Orlando Magic was inaugurated. The first event at the Amway Center was a concert by the Mexican ranchera singer Vicente Fernández on October 8, 2010. Two days later, the Orlando Magic played their first game in their new home. The season preparation game of the NBA against the New Orleans Hornets ended clearly, with a lead of 54 points, 135: 81 for the Magic . The first NBA game of the 2010/11 season took place on October 29, 2010 against the Washington Wizards . Orlando won the game in front of 18,918 spectators with 112: 83.
The hall was equipped with the most modern features. Said the 40-ton, centrally mounted under the ceiling combined HD - video cube and scoreboard of the company Daktronics . It has 18 individual screens and is the largest facility in the NBA. A 16 × 14 meter screen from Daktronics is attached to the building. Events
The Amway Center is used by the Orlando Magic , Orlando Predators, and Orlando Solar Bears . Concerts, shows and family events also take place. The building has 875,000 square feet (approximately 81,290 square meters ) of space. In the premises z. B. Weddings, class reunions, birthdays or banquets are celebrated. On May 4, 2010, NBA Commissioner David Stern announced that the 2012 NBA All-Star Game Weekend will be hosted at the new Orlando arena.
