history

Bertelsdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1074. The former Berkerisdorf , a rural settlement, was mentioned as part of a donation to the Benedictine Abbey of Saalfeld in a confirmation document from the Archbishop of Cologne in Anno II . A document from 1149 also documents Mr. Berthold's Bertoldorf farm , which was transferred to Mönchröden monastery as a founding property and which later became the Bertelsdorf settlement core. The Bertelsdorf manor , also called the Ehrlicherischer Hof after its later owners, existed until the property was sold in 1898.

During the Thirty Years' War , as in the whole of Coburg, in particular due to famine , the number of Bertelsdorf residents decreased from 75 to 25 and in 1639, 11 out of 15 houses were uninhabited. In 1793 the village had 18 houses in which 86 people lived who were exclusively engaged in agriculture. In 1865 there were 108 inhabitants in 21 houses.

The village on the Lauter had had a water-powered grain mill since the 13th or 14th century , which was converted into an oil mill in 1865 and supplemented by a Märbelmühle in 1887 . Electricity has been produced since the 1950s. The supply of electricity by the overland center began in autumn 1922. Instead of a ford and two wooden pedestrian walkways, the first fixed crossing of the Lauter was built in 1860, a stone bridge that spanned the water with an opening. The building was replaced by a new building in the early 1970s. A first telephone connection was established in 1905. The connection to the central water supply network and the Coburg sewerage system followed in the early 1970s. At the beginning of the 21st century, farming was still a family business.

Monasteries, churches and public institutions

There is no school in Bertelsdorf. A joint school with Neuses was established there in 1920. The municipality of the Protestant parish church of St. Matthew in Neuses also includes Bertelsdorf. In 1962 the Catholic Church of St. Mary was built on the Spittelleite, a corridor of the community. In 1967 a Capuchin monastery was built , which was abandoned in 1997.

Community and population development

In 1868 the ducal Saxon State Ministry decreed that the municipality of Glend, with around 40 inhabitants and five eligible voters, had to join a neighboring municipality due to its small size. Glend chose Bertelsdorf.

The development of the population of Bertelsdorf including Glend:

year Residents
1905 237
1935 425
1949 575
1961 525
1970 624
1976 629
2010 1,574

After the Bertelsdorf citizens had voted in 1971 with a voter turnout of 81% with a majority of 80% for further independence, the local council decided to join Coburg in 1976. On January 1st, 1977 the incorporation followed with 365 hectares and 629 inhabitants. Bertelsdorf has the character of a suburban settlement.
