The FedExForum is a multifunctional arena in the US city of Memphis in the state of Tennessee . It serves mainly as the venue for the Memphis Grizzlies from the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the NCAA - college basketball team of the Memphis Tigers ( American Athletic Conference ) of the University of Memphis , both of which previously played in the Memphis Pyramid . The nickname goes back to the Grizzlies player Tony Allen ; who referred to the hall as The Grindhouse . This was done by the Grizzlies fans.
The arena opened in September 2004 after much debate and a storm that almost destroyed the cranes involved in the construction in July 2003. The construction costs of around 250 million US dollars were financed from public funds. Memphis-based FedEx Corporation secured the naming rights for $ 92 million .
The arena offers 18,119 seats for basketball games, but it is also possible to hold ice hockey games , concerts and family shows.
