Glen Johnson (* 2. January 1969 in Clarendon , Jamaica , as Glengoffe Donovan Johnson ) is a Jamaican boxer who sensationally was 2004 world champion boxer.

Career

Johnson's amateur career was 35-5. He boxed mostly in Florida. Eventually he turned pro. After 30 wins against unknown middleweight opponents, he met the light middleweight Sam Garr who had 20 wins against equally bad opponents and scored him. He was then listed in the top ten in the middleweight division by Ring Magazine, which thought a lot of him. Shortly afterwards he got a title fight against Bernard Hopkins but had no chance and went KO. It was the only knockout loss in the good taker's career that had something to do with the fact that he had difficulty getting the weight off. He immediately moved up a class.

In the super middleweight division he lost to the puncher Merqui Sosa and the weak former world class boxer Kiwanuka, who could still beat him on points, but got another title fight at the IBF against Sven Ottke in 1999 . He was only barely defeated. He then lost three more times in a row in 2000, against southpaw Syd Vanderpool, Silvio Branco and Omar Sheika .

Sensational success in the light heavyweight division

In 2001 he was invited to Germany as the opponent of the undefeated amateur star Thomas Ulrich . Here he landed his first big win and knocked out Ulrich. But in 2002 he lost again in his only fight that year against Derek Harmon. In 2003 he started again with a defeat against Julio González . At this time, however, the big turning point in his career with his new manager Henry Foster and especially with the new Cuban coach Orlando Cuellar.

He boxed with Daniel Judah in a draw and defeated his first US American world class opponent southpaw Eric Harding . He was then allowed to box for the IBF light heavyweight title, against the Englishman Clinton Woods . The first fight was a draw, the rematch in 2004 he won on points.

Shortly before that, Antonio Tarver , another southpaw, had knocked out the weak superstar Roy Jones junior , Jones did not want to play again directly against Tarver and arranged a match with the lower-rated Johnson. But here, too, Jones Jr was in weak form and lost significantly by a knockout. Even now Johnson was not yet considered number one, that was the first Jones conqueror Tarver. At the end of the year he also defeated this, albeit by a controversial split decision, and was named boxer of the year by Ring Magazine and USA Today .

In 2005 he lost in a rematch with Tarver, in 2006 he lost in the third fight for the first time against Woods. After he was then able to win his next three fights, he got on April 12, 2008 the chance against Chad Dawson , the world champion of the WBC to compete. He lost this fight by a unanimous decision on points.
