Thomas Ulrich (* 11. July 1975 in Berlin ) is a former German professional boxer in light heavyweight .

Amateur career

Thomas Ulrich started boxing in 1989 at the age of fourteen at the Spandauer Box-Club in 1926 . Just two months later, he played his first amateur fight, which he won early. He celebrated his first successes in 1991 by winning the German junior championship. With this victory he was able to qualify for the Junior World Championship in Montreal in 1992 and finished second there.

After he became German junior champion again in 1993, he entered the German senior championships in Berlin for the first time in 1994 and won the national championship title in light heavyweight with a point win over Sven Ottke . In 1995 he was defeated in the final of the German championship against Torsten Bengtson.

In 1995 Ulrich took part in the World Championships in Berlin and took third place. He defeated Evgeni Makarenko , Russia (19: 9), Mohamed Benguesmia, Algeria (7: 3), and Timur Ibragimov, Uzbekistan , before losing in the semifinals to Dihosvany Vega, Cuba (11: 8). At the military world championship in Rome in the same year he finished second, where he had to admit defeat to Italian Pietro Aurino in the final (10: 6).

In 1996 Ulrich dropped out of the quarter-finals at the European Championships in Vejle and then took part in the Olympic Games in Atlanta for Germany . There he failed after victories over Rick Timperi, Australia (21: 7), Ismael Kone, Sweden (24: 9), and Daniel Bispo, Brazil , only in the semi-finals against Lee Seung-bae , South Korea (14: 7), and could thereby secure a bronze medal.

Professional career

In 1996 he signed a contract with Universum Box-Promotion and made his professional debut on January 11, 1997. In 1999 he became German light heavyweight champion. On April 1, 2000, he won the "Intercontinental" title of the WBO . In his second title defense Ulrich suffered the first defeat of his professional career by a knockout in the sixth round in the fight against Glen Johnson . In 2002 he became European champion. Thomas Ulrich defeated Graciano Rocchigiani on May 10, 2003 in the Stuttgart Schleyer-Halle . It was "Rocky's" last professional fight. After he had in the meantime resigned the European title, he won it again in 2004 with a knockout victory in the eleventh round against the Italian Silvio Branco .

On October 15, 2005 he got the opportunity to fight against Poland's Tomasz Adamek for the WBC World Championship, but failed due to a knockout in the sixth round. Already on July 29, 2006 Ulrich received another world championship fight against his stable mate , the Hungarian WBO title holder Zsolt Erdei , but also lost on the second attempt at a world championship title. He was clearly defeated by Erdei after twelve rounds on points.

In January 2007 Ulrich won the European light heavyweight championship for the third time by an early victory over Rachid Kanfouah. On February 23, 2008, he boxed in a mandatory defense against Yuri Baraschian from Ukraine. After a total of four knockdowns by liver hooks in the seventh and eighth rounds, he was counted and lost the European title by knockout. On March 7, 2009 he fought against Mariano Nicolas Plotinsky from Argentina for the WBO Intercontinental light heavyweight title and surprisingly lost the fight by knockout in the eleventh round. Ulrich first ended his active professional career in July 2009. In October 2010 he got back into the ring in Hamburg and won the super middleweight division against the Hungarian Gyula Gaspar. He canceled a fight planned for January 14, 2012 against Dustin Dirks in the Offenburg Baden-Arena four days in advance for unknown reasons. The fight was rescheduled on May 5, 2012 in Erfurt; Ulrich lost by knockout in the fourth round after being hit in the liver.
