Silvio Branco (born August 26, 1966 in Civitavecchia , Italy ) is an Italian professional boxer from the Roma minority . He was able to become a total of two WBA light heavyweight champions. He is the older brother of the boxer Gianluca Branco .

Boxing career

Silvio Branco boxed in his first professional fight on July 14, 1988 in Italy against Philip Houthoofdt. He dominated the fight and won by knockout in the 5th round. This was followed by further knockout victories against Alfredo Reyes and Jimmy Gourad, among others.

In 1993 Silvio Branco became Italian middleweight champion . He defended his title three times. In 1994 he won the WBC international title and in 1995 the IBF intercontinental title in the same weight class. In 1996 he beat Thomas Tate on points and became WBU middleweight champion. In 2000 he beat Glen Johnson and Robin Reid in the super middleweight division and boxed against Sven Ottke for the IBF world title. He lost controversially on points. In 2003 he competed against Mehdi Sahnoune for the WBA world light heavyweight title and defeated him in the eleventh round by TKO . However, he lost his title in the next fight against the French Fabrice Tiozzo narrowly and by majority decision on points. In July 2006 he defeated Manny Siaca high on points and secured the interim WBA light heavyweight title. When Fabrice Tiozzo resigned his WBA world title in October of the same year in the same weight class, Branco was awarded the full world champion status of the WBA, thus he became world champion in this weight class for the second time. Nine months later, he lost his title to Stipe Drews . In the same year he beat Peter Venancio and became WBC Latino and WBC International light heavyweight champions .

At the age of 43, Branco boxed against Jean Pascal for the WBC light heavyweight championship. Branco lost by technical knockout in the 10th round.

In 2010 Branco won the WBC international cruiserweight title and defended it that same year. In 2012 he boxed twice against Giacobbe Fragomeni for the WBC silver cruiserweight title . The first fight ended in a draw, the second fight ended with a split point decision for Fragomeni. Seven months later he boxed against the Finn Juho Haapoja. It was again about the WBC silver cruiserweight title , this time Silvio Branco was able to secure the title.
