The 1987 Junior World Championships in Havana were more successful , where he finished second in the middleweight division. He was also runner-up at the World Military Championships that took place in the same year, losing to the American Anthony Hembrick in the final . After he became French middleweight champion in 1988, he switched to the pros.

professional

He turned pro in November 1988, defeating his first 25 opponents. In 1991 he secured the French light heavyweight championship. On April 3, 1993 he lost to Virgil Hill in the fight for the WBA title controversial on points, he was down.

With a knockout in the seventh round against the undefeated Dutch defending champion Eddy Smulders , he became European champion in March 1994. He defended the title twice until he got another chance to box a world title.

On June 16, 1995 he managed to win the WBC title with a points win against veteran Mike McCallum , McCallum had to go down in this fight for the first time in his career. After defending his title against the Canadian Eric Lucas , he put his belt back down and rose to the cruiserweight division.

On November 8, 1997, he won against the American Nate Miller and thus secured the WBA cruiserweight title. He defended the belt four times until 2000 before facing Virgil Hill again in a rematch. In this encounter, however, Tiozzo had to hit the ground three times in the first few minutes and lost due to a technical knockout in the first round. After this defeat and the loss of the title, he only fought sporadically, in the next 3.5 years he completed only three more fights.

In 2004 he then returned to the light heavyweight division. He defeated the Italian Silvio Branco in the fight for the WBA title and defended the title in February 2005 with a technical knockout in the sixth round against Dariusz Michalczewski .

In October 2006 he announced his retirement from boxing. Virgil Hill remained the only one who could beat him in the professional ring.
