Virgil Eugene Hill (born January 18, 1964 in Clinton , Missouri ) is a former American professional boxer.

amateur

As an amateur, he was still middleweight boxing, becoming North American Champion in 1983 and National Golden Gloves Champion in 1984 .

At the 3rd Boxing World Cup in Rome in 1983 , he won the bronze medal and qualified for participation in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . After victories over Edward Neblett, Barbados (RSC 2nd), Brian Schumacher, United Kingdom (5: 0), Damir Škaro , Yugoslavia (4: 1), and Mohamed Zaoui , Algeria (5: 0), he was only defeated in the final the South Korean Shin Joon-Sup with 2: 3 and won the silver medal.

Professional career

In November 1984 he turned pro and quickly rose to the light heavyweight division. Except for Marvin Camel, his opponents were completely unknown.

In 1987 he became WBA world champion with a rare knockout victory over southpaw Leslie Stewart from Trinidad . He defended the title ten times until 1991, including against Bobby Czyz . Most of the time he only competed in his home state, the provincial North Dakota , where he was very popular, in the rest of the USA he found little recognition with his uniform counterstyle. On June 3, 1991 he lost the title after a point defeat to Thomas Hearns originally coming from the welterweight division .

In 1993 he won his now vacant WBA title by winning points over Frank Tate . He denied several title defenses, including against Adolpho Washington . The latter had a curious outcome to the fight, as challenger Washington suffered a laceration over his eye when he hit a television camera. The fight then had to be stopped and Hill, who was leading on points at that time, was declared the winner according to the rules of the WBA.

Against the unbeaten French Fabrice Tiozzo he won in France in April 1993 controversial on points; he had Tiozzo on the ground at the beginning and dominated completely, but suffered an injury in the course of the fight and was boxed out with the leading hand for most of the fight. In addition, two points were deducted from him through warnings. Two judges scored the fight in his favor.

Against the unbeaten Lou del Valle he was on the ground for the first time in his career in April 1996. On November 23, 1996, he met the undefeated IBF World Champion Henry Maske in a union match in his last professional match. In a balanced battle with a few clear hits, the American was awarded the point victory, which rose to double world champion.

Immediately in the next fight in June 1997 Hill faced the WBO world champion Dariusz Michalczewski for another title association , where he lost his two world titles by scoring. He then fought in a non-title fight against WBC world champion Roy Jones Jr. He had to go through a liver hook in the fourth round and lost for the first time in his career by knockout . This defeat caused him to leave the light heavyweight division and henceforth to fight in the cruiserweight division .

In December 2000 he won the WBA cruiserweight title by a surprising first round knockout over Fabrice Tiozzo (Hill had been 12-1 underdog), but lost it in his first title defense to Jean-Marc Mormeck by giving up after the eighth round. He then tested positive for ephedrine . He also lost in his second meeting with Mormeck in May 2004.

Mormeck then lost in a unification fight in January 2006 against IBF world champion O'Neil Bell , who was then named WBA " Superchamp ". The thus vacant subordinate, "regular" title was able to win Hill on January 27, 2006 by a point victory over the Russian Valeri Brudow .

On March 31, 2007, Hill boxed again after more than a year of inactivity against Henry Maske , who returned to the ring for this duel ten years after his resignation. In this encounter, which was not counted as a title fight, the American lost on points in the Olympiahalle Munich . In the eighth round he suffered a deep laceration over the left eyebrow due to an unintentional headbutt, whereupon Mask was punished with a point deduction.

In November of the same year Virgil Hill had to defend his WBA title against Firat Arslan , who had now risen to WBA interim world champion, where he was again defeated on points. For the 43-year-old Hill, this defeat meant the end of his boxing career.
