The other major boxing associations then also introduced the weight class. His NABF title win was the first in this weight class.

Marvin Camel and the Yugoslav Mate Parlov were selected from eight boxers to fight for the title. Parlov was an amateur world champion and Olympic champion before he became a professional European champion and 1978 WBC world champion light heavyweight. The fight between Camel and Parlov ended in a draw after 15 rounds, with one of the three judges having scored the fight 147: 142 for Camel. Then it came to the rematch on March 31, 1980 in Las Vegas , this time Camel was declared the unanimous winner on points after 15 rounds. However, he lost the title on November 25, 1980 in New Orleans just on points to Carlos De León . He also suffered a defeat in the rematch on February 24, 1982 in Atlantic City .

On December 13, 1983, he won the first cruiserweight world title of the IBF in Halifax by a tKo victory in the fifth round against the Canadian Roddy MacDonald.
