Carlos De León (born May 3, 1959 in Rio Piedras , Puerto Rico , † January 1, 2020 ) was a Puerto Rican boxer. He was a multiple world cruiserweight champion .

Career

Carlos De León turned pro in 1974 at the age of 15. In 1976 and 1977 he lost two development fights against unknown opponents, but then started a winning streak with clarified counter-boxing.

On November 25, 1980, he won the newly created cruiserweight division against the first WBC title holder in the class, Marvin Camel , and became world champion. In his first title defense in February 1982 he beat the same opponent by technical knockout before he was defeated by the hard hitting but little respected ST Gordon that same year .

In 1983 he defeated Leon Spinks prematurely in a non-title fight and won the WBC title back with a points win over Gordon. In a defense he beat the light heavyweight legend Yaqui Lopez prematurely, but then lost again in 1985 with Alfonso Ratliff against a little respected man, this time on points. However, he won the title back against his conqueror Bernard Benton .

After three more title defenses, he lost in 1988 to Evander Holyfield , who owned the other two titles of the WBA and IBF , prematurely in a unification fight.

When Holyfield rose to the heavyweight division, De Leon won the WBC title for the fourth time and defended it with a draw against Johnny Nelson of England, but then lost to Italian Massimiliano Duran by disqualification and never fought for a world championship belt again.

At the end of his career he lost in the heavyweight division to Corrie Sanders and Brian Nielsen .
