Profile in the BoxRec database

Cornelius Johannes "Corrie" Sanders (born January 7, 1966 in Pretoria , South Africa ; † September 23, 2012 ibid) was a South African boxer and world heavyweight champion according to the WBO version .

Sanders was considered a very aggressive boxer with immense punch and strong taker qualities. Due to the fact that he was not very diligent in training, he had problems with stamina throughout his career if he could not decide his fights within the first rounds.

Boxing career

Sander's record as an amateur boxer was 180-11 with four wins over Francois Botha . His first fight as a pro denied the southpaw on 4 February 1989 against his compatriot Dyubele he by technical o. K. won in the first round. In the following years he won victories over Johnny DuPloy and Bert Cooper .

He suffered his first defeat on May 21, 1994 against Nate Tubbs , then sparring partner of Mike Tyson , when he lost to knockout in round two.

He then won 13 fights in a row, including against Carlos De León , Ross Puritty and Bobby Czyz . On May 20, 2000, he met Hasim Rahman . In the third round he managed a knockdown, but he could not win the fight at this point. Instead, he had to go down several times and finally lost the fight to technical knockout.

After two short victories against Michael Sprott and Otis Tisdale, he got talking to a fight against Wladimir Klitschko , who was looking for an opponent to defend the WBO World Championship after allegedly eleven other boxers had previously refused to play against Klitschko. Sanders finally agreed.

WBO title win

On March 8, 2003, there was an encounter with Wladimir Klitschko in Hanover . Klitschko went into this dispute with the already 37-year-old Sanders, who was considered untrained, as a high favorite. However, Sanders quickly got four knockdowns, which caused the referee to stop the fight in the second round and to declare Sanders the winner by a technical knockout.

The WBO then demanded a compulsory defense of his title against Lamon Brewster . But since he, now 38 years old, wanted to make only a few, financially lucrative fights at the end of his career, he resigned this title in order to be able to fight against Vitali Klitschko for the vacant WBC world title .

WBC title fight

On April 24, 2004, he arrived in Los Angeles on Vitali Klitschko and lost the fight by technical knockout. In the eighth round. Although he managed to land some good hits in the first rounds that impressed Klitschko, the fight nevertheless developed in Klitschko's favor, also helped by Sanders' well-known physical condition problems. After many hard hits by Klitschko, the fight was finally stopped sixteen seconds before the end of the eighth round.

Attempts at comeback

On April 27, 2004, he initially announced his retirement from professional boxing. But his retirement did not last long, on December 14, 2004 he was back in the ring and defeated Alexei Warakin by knockout in the second round.

On November 24, 2006, Sanders returned to the ring after nearly two years of inactivity, defeating Australian national heavyweight champion Colin Wilson early in the second round. On May 12, 2007 Sanders won the fight against Daniel Bispo clearly on points. On February 2, 2008, however, he went surprisingly against Osborne Machimana (balance 14-5) in the first round by a body hit knockout, which his plans for a new fight against Wladimir Klitschko had done.
