Brits is a city in the South African province of Northwest ( Northwest ). It is the administrative seat of the municipality of Madibeng in the Bojanala Platinum district .

geography

In 2011 Brits had 25,604 inhabitants, the neighboring township of Oukasie had 27,907 inhabitants. about half of them in the west. The area south of the train station is called Primindia and was reserved for Indians during the apartheid period . Brits is located west of Tshwane - 55 kilometers from Pretoria - and thus in the east of the northwest province.

Brits is north of the Magaliesberg . The Crocodile River , which is dammed in Hartbeespoort Dam to the south , flows around Brits immediately west to the north. It is a source river of the Limpopo .

history

In 1840 the farm De Kroon was laid out by a Boer . In 1906, today's Brits station was built on the farm of Johan Nicolaas Brits. In 1923, Brits received parish status.

Economy and Transport

Brits is an agricultural center whose area is irrigated from Hartbeespoort Dam. It is also known for its heavy industry . Alfa Romeo South Africa produced motor vehicles here from 1973 to 1985. Also is promoted to Brit's platinum .

Brits is on the R511 road which connects Thabazimbi to the northwest and Sandton to the southeast. The city is also on the R512, which leads to Randburg in the south, and the R566, which connects Ga-Rankuwa in the east with National Route 4 , which passes Brits in an east-west direction.

Brits has a train station on the Pretoria – Thabazimbi route, which is used by freight. Another route operated by freight traffic leads from Brits north to Beestekraal . The Brits Airfield ( ICAO code FABS) is located northwest of the city and is not served in regular service. The runway is 900 meters long.
