The district is divided into 17 units , which are numbered with gaps from 1 to 25 or have other names. There is an industrial area in Unit 15 . The Magaliesberg lies south of Ga-Rankuwa .

history

Ga-Rankuwa was bought by Batswana in the 19th century, who set up a settlement on the Hebron farm . There are several theories as to the meaning of the name. In 1967, Ga-Rankuwa was declared a township by the authorities . Among other things, people settled here who had to leave the Lady Selborne district, which is closer to the center, due to public orders. Ga-Rankuwa was added to the Homeland Bophuthatswana , which was founded in 1962 and formally independent from 1977 . In this way, low-wage labor was made available for the industrial areas in Rosslyn in northern Pretoria. In 1975 73,926 people lived here. At that time, the settlement was one of the largest township complexes in the country. In 1976, on the outskirts of the settlement, the construction of a higher educational institution for blacks began, in which medical and veterinary professions could be learned. This university, called MEDUNSA for short , was a consequence of the education policy of the apartheid state due to its demographic exclusion criteria when enrolling .

From 1994, Ga-Rankuwa belonged to the Northwest Province before it became part of the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng Province in 2000.

Infrastructure

There are two university facilities in Ga-Rankuwa, the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (formerly Medical University of South Africa, Medunsa, the University of Limpopo ) , founded in 2014, and a campus of the Tshwane University of Technology . The Dr George Mukhari Hospital serves as a teaching hospital and is the second largest hospital in South Africa.
