Mabopane is a township and district of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in the South African province of Gauteng . At times he belonged to the Homeland Bophuthatswana .
geography
Mabopane is about 30 kilometers northwest of Pretoria. In 2011 there were 110,972 residents. The district is for the most part divided into units . Mabopane is located directly at the border to the province of North West . The Tswaing crater is located near the district .
history
In 1959, the later settlement area was designated as a residential area for blacks. The first residents of the township after it was founded in 1972 were displaced people, for example from Lady Selborne .
From 1977 to 1994 the greater part of Mabopane belonged to the formally independent homeland Bophuthatswana. Batswana lived there , while the east of Mabopane was separated from the other ethnic groups of the district as Soshanguve , which today exceeds Mabopane in population. In 2011, almost 60 percent of the residents said Setswana was their mother tongue.
Transport and other infrastructure
Mabopane is connected by several inner-city roads, including the M21 Motorway .
Mabopane station is at the end of a branch line and is served by local trains from the Gauteng Metrorail .
The Odi Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium with around 60,000 seats. Several international matches for the South African national football team took place there. It has not been used for football league matches since 2008.
