Soshanguve is a township and district of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in the South African province of Gauteng . Soshanguve is an artificial word that was formed from the first syllables of the names of the ethnic groups Sotho , Shangaan , Nguni and Venda .
geography
Soshanguve is about 30 kilometers northwest of Pretoria. In 2011 there were 403,162 residents. Soshanguve borders the Northwest Province in the north . In the unpopulated north of the district lies the Tswaing crater . To the west is the township of Mabopane , to the southwest of Ga-Rankuwa . In 2011, around 28 percent said they had Sepedi as their mother tongue, 17 percent spoke Setswana ; other languages had fewer speakers.
history
The township was separated from the Mabopane township in 1974. Mabopane should only be inhabited by Batswana as part of the homeland policy . For the rest of the black population, Soshanguve was founded, which remained in the Transvaal province when the homeland Bophuthatswana was formed . Many residents were forcibly relocated from the townships of Atteridgeville and Mamelodi, which are closer to Pretoria .

Soshanguve is served by local trains of the Metrorail Gauteng at several stations on the Pretoria Station –Mabopane route.
The Soshanguve North and Soshanguve South campuses of the Tshwane University of Technology , formerly Technicon Northern Gauteng, are located in Soshanguve .
