The Odi Stadium is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the South African township of Mabopane , part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in the Gauteng Province . Mabopane is about 30 kilometers north of Pretoria , the capital of the country. The stadium was mainly used for soccer games. It offers seats for 60,000 spectators.

history

The Odi Stadium was built when Mabopane was part of the formally independent homeland of Bophuthatswana .

Architecturally speaking, the Odi Stadium is one of the most unusual stadiums in the world. The most prominent features of the facility are the design with the shape of the stadium and the arrangement of the stands. The sports facility, without any roofing, has an almost square footprint. The natural turf playing field is enclosed by the athletics facility. The tiers on the two long sides as well as in the curves behind the goal have a triangular shape. Further square spectator blocks were mounted on a steel structure around the edge of the stand. You enter the arena via one of the four access ramps, which then branch into further corridors. Four floodlight masts tower vertically into the sky.

Throughout its history, several Pretoria football clubs such as Mamelodi Sundowns , Pretoria City / Supersport United, and the Arcadia Shepherds have played games. Over time, the facility has developed into a white elephant . The football club Garankuwa United rose in 2006 to the second highest division in the country, the National First Division. The club moved to the larger Odi Stadium. In 2008, Garankuwa United was relegated again and moved to Pilditch Stadium .

Since then there has not been a football match at the Odi Stadium. Today it is clearly marked by decay and vandalism . The stadium is in a state in which it can no longer be fully used. The building structure has been attacked and there is no electricity or running water. There is violence , crime , drug trafficking and abuse there . The metropolitan municipality only organizes sports such as volleyball , athletics and cricket there . The metropolitan municipality has to decide whether it will be renovated or demolished.
