Katlego Mphela (born November 29, 1984 in Brits ) is a former South African soccer player .
Club career
Mphela started his career at Jomo Cosmos . In 2003 he was discovered by the French first division club Racing Strasbourg during a European trip of the youth team of Cosmos and signed. After a total of 14 missions (including 12 as a substitute) until the end of the 2004/05 season, he was awarded by Strasbourg for the following season to the second division Stade Reims . There the striker was dissatisfied with his reserve existence at an early stage and broke off his stay at Reims after a few months.
From Strasbourg he was then awarded to South Africa to Supersport United , where Mphela quickly established himself and was named "Rookie of the Year" at the end of the season. After the end of his loan period in the summer of 2006, he played again for Strasbourg, but was dismissed from his club in November 2006 without completing another assignment for the professional team and returned to South Africa, where he again joined Supersport. With United he won the South African championship in 2008, but was not particularly successful with just one penalty this season. For the 2008/09 season, the attacker with the nickname "Killer" switched to league competitor Mamelodi Sundowns . After only three goals in his first season for the Sundowns, he scored 17 times in league games in the 2009/10 season and thus won the title of top scorer. In the final table of the championship they finished second one point behind Supersport. In late March 2011, he was arrested for being drunk driving. After the trial on October 4, 2011, he was now facing a prison sentence.
After this incident, he won the championship twice, in 2013/14 with the Mamelodi Sundowns and a year later with the Kaizer Chiefs . He announced the end of his career after the 2017 season as a player for the Royal Eagle Durban .
National team
Mphela made his debut in the South African national team during the COSAFA Cup in 2005 and scored a total of three times in the two games against the Seychelles and Mauritius. In 2006 and 2008 Mphela was part of the South African squad at the African Cup of Nations , but failed in both tournaments with his team in the group stage. In 2009 he was part of the 23-strong squad for the Confederations Cup in their own country. During the tournament Bernard Parker and Thembinkosi Fanteni were favored by coach Joel Santana , Mphela only made his first brief appearance in the semifinals against Brazil. In the game for third place against the European champions Spain, Mphela was substituted on after 64 minutes and scored the 1-0 opening goal nine minutes later. After the Spaniards turned the game around in the closing stages, it was again Mphela who equalized with a free kick goal from around 30 meters in stoppage time and ensured extra time, in which Spain finally prevailed 3-2. The free kick was also included in the selection for the FIFA Puskás Prize , the most remarkable goal of the year.
