Alfa Romeo GTV6 for the South African market

Alfa Romeo South Africa (Pty) Ltd was an automobile manufacturer in Brits, South Africa and a subsidiary of Alfa Romeo .

history

In 1958 the first copies of the Giulietta were imported to South Africa. The first vehicles were later assembled in South Africa by Car Distributors and Assemblers (CDA).

Alfa Romeo South Africa was founded in 1962. With CDA's assembly lines at full capacity, Alfa Romeo moved production to Rosslyn Motor Assemblers in 1967 . In 1971, construction began on its own factory in Brits, where production began two years later.

In December 1985 production in South Africa was stopped after heavy losses.

South Africa was at times the most important market for Alfa Romeo outside of Italy. Alfa Romeo was also successful in South African motorsport.

Models

In addition to the Alfasud, the factory in Brits produced the 2nd generation of the Giulietta as well as the Alfetta and Alfa 33 . In addition (from 1978) the Fiat 128 (also as a pick-up) and the Fiat Elita . Other models were the Alfa Romeo GTV and the Alfa 6 . Some models (Alfasud, Giulietta, GTV) were also made that were not available in Europe, for example a Giulietta with 150 bhp (112 kW) or a GTV with 3 l displacement. This GTV, which can be recognized from the outside by a large scoop, developed 174 hp (128 kW), was intended for motorsport and 212 copies were produced from 1984 to 1985. This model was the fastest car built in South Africa at the time.

In the past two years, the Brits factory has also produced nearly 4,500 Daihatsu Charade . These were intended for the South African or the Italian market.
