The Alfa Romeo Alfa 6 was an upper mid-range vehicle from the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo . It was built from April 1979 to December 1986.

General

The Alfa 6 was visually very similar to the mid-range Alfa Romeo Alfetta , but had significantly larger external dimensions. In contrast to the Alfetta, the large Alfa ( called Alfone in Italy ) was not designed as a transaxle , but had a conventional drive.

The introduction of the vehicle was postponed from autumn 1973 to spring 1979 due to the oil crisis, which is why the design with its large overhangs and 14-inch wheels already looked a bit out of date when presented. The engine with originally six Dell'Orto FRPA 40 carburetors was used in various Alfa models until 2005. The transmission came from ZF , a chassis with torsion bar spring and double wishbone suspension worked at the front, a De-Dion axle with internal brake discs at the rear . Ate four-piston brake calipers with delayed front. A 25% differential lock ensured optimum traction.

Magnesium rims, central locking, power windows, air conditioning, leather upholstery, optional ZF three-speed automatic and a large trunk made the Alfone a sporty, luxurious sedan that was used in Italy as a government vehicle. A vehicle was even created for the Pope. In terms of price, it was initially based on the top mid-range models of the time, the Mercedes 280 E and the BMW 528i, and was only offered in one engine variant, the 2.5-liter V6. The front section of the vehicle has similarities to the first BMW 7 series due to the double round headlights and the radiator grille insert with the company logo that was common at that time at Alfa Romeo .

As part of a model maintenance measure in the spring of 1983, the design was revised by Bertone . One of the most noticeable visual changes of the second series was the use of broadband headlights instead of the previously used double headlights. A striking detail was the stylized large "B" on the C-pillar as a symbol for Bertone. It served as an air outlet and covered the filler neck. The interior was now much more luxurious and more in keeping with the original concept as the successor to the Maserati Quattroporte . The engine range has been extended by three engines: a 2.5-liter V6 injection engine with Bosch L-Jetronic, a 2.5-liter turbodiesel with five cylinders of VM Motori in Cento , who later also in the Toyota Land Cruiser and Range Rover was used and a 2 liter carburettor version of the V6.

At the end of 1986 the production of the Alfa 6 was stopped after only 12,050 units had been built, 6358 of which were of the first series, 1168 of the second series with 2.5-liter V6, 1771 with 2.0-liter V6 and 2746 with 2.5 -Liter R5 turbodiesel engine. Seven copies of the first series, which had been imported into the USA with numerous modifications , were immediately scrapped by the importer as not for sale.
