successor Alfa Romeo 2600

As the successor to the 1900 model from Alfa Romeo , the 2000 series was presented for the first time at the 1957 Turin Motor Show. Sales began in early 1958.

The series initially consisted of two models:

  • "Berlina" (No. 102.00): four-door notchback sedan (manufactured by Alfa Romeo in the Portello plant)
  • "Spider" (No. 102.04): two-door convertible (designed by Felice Bianchi Anderloni and manufactured by the Italian Carrozzeria Touring )

The two-door Sprint Coupé (No. 102.05), which was manufactured by Bertone and designed by the then young Giorgio Giugiaro , followed in the spring of 1960 .

technology

The four-cylinder engines (displacement: 1975 cm³) with two overhead camshafts and two double carburettors , with a bore of 84.5 mm and a stroke of 88 mm , were essentially carried over from the predecessor 1900. They produce a maximum of 115 PS (85 kW), the Berlina engine 105 PS (77 kW). With them, the cars can reach top speeds of 175 km / h or 160 km / h (Berlina). Five-speed transmission and a suspension on double wishbones at the front, a steering system with a worm and roller and a rigid axle at the rear guided by two trailing arms and a reaction triangle (triangle arm) complete the picture.

In contrast to the smaller Alfa Romeo Giulietta , however, the great market success did not materialize. The vehicles were relatively expensive (Spider 1958: 2.5 million lire), but didn't look like much. In addition to the European markets, the 2000s were mainly sold in the USA, but also in South Africa and Australia. The following quantities were produced according to the standard source "Fusi", although slightly different numbers appear in the literature.

  • Berlina: 2927
  • Spider: 3445
  • Sprint: 706

successor

The successor was the Alfa Romeo 2600 , which from spring 1961 initially replaced the Spider and a year later both Sprint and Berlina. The main differences were a more powerful six-cylinder engine and various changes to the body. Today, the 2000s and 2600s, especially in the elegant Spider version, are sought-after classic cars .

The production of the Alfa Romeo 2000 Berlina was continued from the beginning of 1961 by the Brazilian company Fábrica Nacional de Motores (FNM) near Rio de Janeiro under the name FNM 2000 until the 1970s. The engines were enlarged by FNM to 2.15 liters, later to 2.3 liters, and the body was modified several times.

The brand name "2000" was used again from mid-1971 by Alfa Romeo for the Alfa Romeo 1750 series.
