The Alfa Romeo 146 is a lower middle class automobile from the Italian automaker Alfa Romeo . It was the successor of the Alfa 33 and the predecessor of the bestseller Alfa Romeo 147 . The Alfa 146 is the five-door and butt-tailed sister model to the Alfa Romeo 145 .

history

Production began in January 1995, initially with 8V and 16V boxer engines taken over from the Alfa 33 . From December 1996, the four-cylinder in-line engines with twin ignition ( Twin Spark ) were used together with slight optical modifications .

The Alfa 146 was available with gasoline engines from 1.4 to 2.0 liters displacement (2.0 16V TS  ti with 110 kW; from 1998: 114 kW), as well as with two 1.9-liter turbodiesel engines. In addition to Twin Spark , the 1.8 and 2.0 liter in-line engines were also equipped with a variable intake manifold (models from 1998 with 106 kW or 114 kW) and a phase adjuster for the intake camshaft. The 2.0-liter engine also had two balance shafts. The 1.4 and 1.6 liter in-line engines were also equipped with a phase adjuster and dual ignition, but always without a variable intake manifold.

In October 1998 another facelift took place parallel to the 145. Like this one, the bumper was now modified (bumper strips used, bumpers now completely painted in body color except for a narrow bumper strip), different hub caps with a colored Alfa Romeo logo as well as modified ventilation nozzles in the interior and instruments and door openers decorated with chrome rings. Furthermore, the safety equipment has been improved, whereby z. B. Side airbags were now standard.

Although the 145 and 146 models were partially galvanized and therefore not very susceptible to rust , they could not establish themselves outside of Italy because of Alfa’s deteriorated image.

Production stopped in December 2000. In Germany some were sold more than 15 000 vehicles.
