Alfa Romeo 1900 is a range of automobiles by the Alfa Romeo company , which was manufactured from autumn 1950 to late summer 1959.

By Orazio Satta Puliga designed notchback sedan Berlina , the base for various coupes and other variants, was established in October 1950 to the Motor Show in Paris presented. It was the company's first newly developed model after the Second World War, its first to be produced on an assembly line and its first with a self-supporting body .

engine

The four-cylinder engine was newly developed. It initially had a displacement of 1884 cm³ (bore 82.55 mm, stroke 88 mm) and the simplest version made 59 kW (80 hp). A special feature were the two overhead camshafts , which were driven by chains and made the engine very easy to turn. In 1954, the displacement was increased to 1975 cm³ (bore then 84.5 mm) and the power increased to 66 kW (90 hp). From 1900 onwards, the models were called Super to distinguish them. For additional power there was a variant with the abbreviation “ti” (Turismo Internationale), which developed 74 kW (100 PS) or as a super 85 kW (115 PS).

The four-door Berlina quickly became popular with high-earning family men who also wanted to do or want to do motorsport. In the advertising for the Alfa Romeo 1900 it was called “la berlina che vince le corse” (German: “the sedan that wins races”). This was not even very exaggerated, since the top speed of the four-door car was an impressive 160 to 170 km / h at the time. The sporty Berlina 1900 ti Super even reached 180 km / h.

An independent suspension on double wishbones on the front axle and the comparatively low weight of a good 1000 kg underlined the sporty note. Only the four-speed steering wheel gearshift does not quite fit into the picture.

In very small numbers there was also a variant with an extended wheelbase and a rare two-door version called “Primavera” for representative purposes under the name “Lunga”.

A total of 17,390 Berlinas were made, 1095 of them in the fast ti version.

Coupes, convertibles and other variants

On a shortened floor pan with reinforcements, elegant two-door coupés and some convertibles were produced by the Touring company on behalf of Alfa Romeo . With the model change to the super version, the models were revised and a distinction is therefore made between a first and a second series. But other automobile designers, such as B. Pininfarina , Zagato and Ghia manufactured two-door models as convertibles and coupes based on the 1900s. As a type designation, these vehicles were given the abbreviation 1900C for corto (short wheelbase) and the addition "Sprint" or just "S". They combined elegance and sportiness. The top speed was 180 km / h or more. Even then, these vehicles were by no means cheap. An Alfa Romeo 1900C Super Sprint cost around 31,000 marks in Germany in 1954, around 2,000 more than a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL gullwing . A total of 1,808 Sprint were produced.

Other variants were the Matta off-road vehicle and various prototypes such as the Disco Volante or the Batmobile .

End of production

In early 1958, the Alfa Romeo 2000 succeeded the 1900 series, which was also offered as the Berlina, Sprint and Cabriolet ("Spider").

From 1960 to 1962, the 1900 sedan under the name " IKA Bergantin " was continued to be built by Industrias Kaiser Argentina in Argentina, but equipped with their 2.5-liter four-cylinder or 3.7-liter six-cylinder engines (Bergantin Super 6) . 7,998 vehicles with four-cylinder engines and 353 Super 6s were built there.
