The Alfa Romeo Disco Volante was a racing car produced by the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo .

backgrounds

Because of its unusual shape, it attracted a lot of attention in its time. It got its name because of the original two-seater body, which was designed by Orazio Satta Puliga , Development Manager at Alfa Romeo, together with the designer Carlo Chiti and which was then built by the Touring company . The Italian word "Disco Volante" means "Flying Saucer" in German. The aerodynamic shape at that time was exceptionally good with a C w value of 0.30. In 1952, six Disco Volante were initially produced. Two of them had a frame with a short wheelbase and a 4-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1,900 cc . The top speed of the car was 225 km / h.

Motorsport

The car was further developed in 1953 and Alfa Romeo now wanted to achieve victories with great dedication. A whole team with four coupés was registered for the Mille Miglia . One car was equipped with a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of two liters, the other three had six cylinders with a displacement of 3.6 liters. The 2 liter car gave up at the beginning of the race, the other three took turns holding the lead of the race. However, an engine failure stopped the first car and a loss of oil in the transmission stopped the second. The third car, driven by Juan Manuel Fangio , suffered partial damage to the steering and was therefore unable to take the corners at full speed. Therefore, Fangio was overtaken by a Ferrari and only reached the finish line in second place. Some Disco Volante also competed in the 24-hour races of Spa and Le Mans , but they were also unsuccessful. The only win a Disco Volante took for Alfa Romeo was a modest win at the Supercortemaggiore Grand Prix .
