The Alfa 75 is a four-door mid-range sedan from the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo , which was built from spring 1985 to summer 1992. From 1986 to 1989 the Alfa 75 was also sold in the USA under the name Alfa Romeo Milano .

history

The 75 was introduced as the successor to the Giulietta in May 1985. The name refers to the 75th anniversary that the Alfa Romeo brand celebrated in the same year. Its internal type designation is 162B.

Since Alfa Romeo was taken over by Fiat in 1986 and the Alfa 75 was the last Alfa with the characteristic transaxle technology and the last Alfa sedan with rear-wheel drive, many Alfisti speak of the 75 being the last real Alfa. The Alfa Romeo 164 was also planned in Alfa times; However, it did not appear until after the Fiat takeover and had a front-wheel drive that was untypical for Alfa up to then .

technology

As with its predecessors, the Alfa 75 had the engine longitudinally at the front and the gearbox on the rear axle (transaxle). It was available with four and six-cylinder engines, and at times also with four-cylinder turbo engines. In the Twin Spark engines, the one from the Alfetta 2.0 i. e. (with electronic fuel injection) used known adjustable intake camshaft (phase converter).

The front wheels are individually suspended on double wishbones , a rigid De-Dion axle is installed at the rear , which is guided by a drawbar and a Watt linkage . The 75 has a balanced weight distribution of 50% on the front axle and 50% on the rear axle.

Rear view

The body of the Alfa 75 was designed by Ermanno Cressoni , head of Alfa Romeo Cento Stile. The 75 took over the passenger cell from the Giulietta. The window frames and the door cutouts of the 75 corresponded to those of the predecessor; the door panels were taken over from the Giulietta unchanged. They only differed in that they had additional plastic strips underneath the windows. The Alfa designers continued the plastic strip up to the trunk, but changed the angle in the area of the C-pillar. This results in a distinctive kink that is typical for this model.

The Alfa 75 had a 49 liter tank on the right rear under the car floor. US safety regulations required a different installation of the tank. It was therefore installed behind the rear seats in the trunk and had a capacity of 68 liters. This reduced the trunk from 500 to 380 liters. The European models with 1.8-liter turbo engines, 2.5- and 3.0-liter V6 engines were also equipped in this way. The 3.0-liter V6 models were 4.41 meters instead of 4.33 meters long, due to modified bumpers according to US regulations. European Alfa 75 3.0 V6 were also only delivered in this way.

In 1985, the Rayton Fissore bodywork constructed two prototypes of a station wagon ( Sport Wagon and Turbo Wagon ), which were shown at the 1985 Turin Motor Show and the 1986 Geneva Motor Show . The station wagons had a straight beltline; the kink in the area of the C-pillar that is typical of the sedan was omitted. As a result of the takeover by Fiat, the station wagon was never built in series. Several completed 75 Sport Wagons, however, served in the factory traffic of the Alfa Romeo factory in Milan.

Facelift

In autumn 1988 the Alfa 75 was revised. The bumpers and side skirts were now partially painted. The radiator grille, the headlights and the rear lights were also modified and from then on corresponded to the then current family design.

Alfa Romeo equipped the last 5,000 units with a 2.0 twin-spark engine. They were called "Limited Edition" and were delivered until autumn 1992. They differed from the normal Twin Spark by a special Recaro interior, different aluminum wheels and a serial number of the limited edition on the dashboard.

As the successor to the 75, the Alfa 155 was introduced in early 1992 .
