history
The magazine first appeared in 1946 under the title Das Auto and until the end of 1950 had the subtitle Lkw - Motorrad - Sport (spelling: das AUTO - LKW * MOTORRAD * SPORT ), with "motorcycle" versus "Lkw" and "Sport" at times was highlighted in bold. With issue 1/1951 the subtitle was dropped on January 1, 1951, until it was replaced by "Motor und Sport" in issue 10/1951 on April 21, 1951 and the title was added to Auto Motor und Sport for the first time . In the following year, the subtitle was visually upgraded with its own background area, but remained recognizable as such.
The spelling AUTO - MOTOR UND SPORT on two small, overlapping red areas for the title and subtitle was on the front pages from issue 1/1952 on New Year's Day 1952 to issue 26/1962 on Christmas 1962 and was published with issue 1/1963 on December 12th January 1963 relaunched to the uniform and almost unchanged spelling in lower case letters without subtitles on a red background (see above).
The weekly publication date also changed several times in the history of the magazine: the new issue was available on Saturdays until December 1974, Wednesdays from 01/1975 to 02/1986, Saturdays from 03/1986 to 06/1988, from 07/1988 to 12 / 1997 on Fridays, from 01/1998 to 12/2007 on Wednesdays and since 01/2008 on Thursdays.
In Germany, auto motor und sport , which had an average circulation of 356,951 issues in the fourth quarter of 2017, is only surpassed on the open market by Auto Bild (533,931 copies). There are other high- circulation magazines with a focus on mobility in Germany for members of automobile clubs ( ADAC Motorwelt : 13,737,445 copies, ACE Lenkrad: 558,965 copies).
Every year, the magazine awards the “Best Cars” award, in which three current cars are raffled off among all readers' entries, and it conducts image surveys among readers about the manufacturers.
