Fritz B. Busch (born May 2, 1922 in Erfurt as Fritz Bob Busch ; † August 5, 2010 in Vogt ) was a German motor journalist who wrote humorous and satirical articles as well as non-fiction books on the subject of cars .

Life

In the early 1960s, he became known for his series of articles For Men Who Smoke a Pipe in the automobile magazine Auto, Motor und Sport . His best-known contribution from this series was an impression published in 1961 about the Jaguar E-Type under the title Whiskey pure or: The Flounder .

Then Henri Nannen won him for the star , as the successor to Alexander Spoerl . Stern editor-in-chief Nannen resigned him, however, while Busch made a trip from Fairbanks in Alaska to Tierra del Fuego ; but when Busch returned there was an offer from Quick magazine . Most recently he wrote a monthly column for the classic car magazine Motor Klassik .

In 1965 Busch presented a city car developed together with the German Michael Conrad and the Italian Pio Manzù at the IAA in Frankfurt am Main . The "Autonova Fam" was intended as an alternative to the passenger cars of the time; Busch described the models of the automobile industry as "inexpedient" and "not suitable for traffic". In addition, the “Team Autonova” designed the two-seater sports coupé “ NSU Autonova GT”. What both cars had in common was the “unmistakable concrete line” of the Autonova team: “Functional, factual, practical, chrome-free, consistent”. Both vehicles were built by the Italian company Carrozzeria Sibona-Basano , but no sponsors were found for the series production of one of the models.

Busch also thought about the right clothes for driving. So he came up with "a man's wardrobe ... that is finally really suitable to serve the man instead of ... hindering him while driving". The waist of the trousers he developed was adjustable in three widths, the matching jacket was very elastic and, in addition to three adjustment loops at the waist, had two pleats in the back. The collar size of the shirt could be "steplessly" regulated using Velcro . Easily accessible pockets on the sleeves and legs provided storage space. The functional clothing was not only reserved for men: skirts adjustable in the waist width were provided for the chauffeur, which also had plenty of storage space in the form of pockets.

Based on a Formula 2 racing car, Busch built a record-breaking vehicle, the "Diesel Star". The shell, made of 25 square meters of sheet aluminum, was fastened with 3,000 rivets, Mercedes-Benz supported the project with a five-cylinder turbodiesel that was arranged as a mid-engine. For the record attempt, the engine was equipped with a turbocharger from AiResearch and a special injection pump from Bosch, and it was also slightly modified: Smaller cylinder bores reduced the displacement to 2,999 cm 3 ; the engine received a nitrided crankshaft and a reinforced oil pump as well as special injection nozzles and developed 138 kW (187 hp) at 4500 min −1 . On November 16, 1975, Busch set the world record for diesel vehicles with a top speed of 253.7 km / h with the “Diesel Star” on the Volkswagen test track in Ehra-Lessien . It is particularly noteworthy that the diesel records that were valid until then were set in straight driving on salt fields in Utah / USA, whereas Busch also had to take corners and brake on the test track.

A 500-year old annex of the princely castle of Waldburg-Wolfegg in Upper Swabia Wolfegg founded Busch 1973 Automobile Museum , which was further out between 1998 and 2016 his daughter Anka Busch. In 2017, parts of this collection were integrated into the Auto & Tractor Museum near Uhldingen-Mühlhofen .
