The Alfasud Sprint (only Sprint from mid-1983 ) was a three-door station wagon coupe from the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo based on Alfasud .

history

The Alfasud Sprint was released in September 1976 and was sold until December 1989. The years of construction differ significantly from that of the Alfasud sedan (April 1972 to June 1983). The body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro . Various similarities to the VW Scirocco I , which was also designed by Giugiaro at the same time, are therefore no coincidence.

Compared to the normal Alfasud, the Sprint had a completely independent body shape. As with the Alfasud, the technical features were front-wheel drive and a longitudinally lying water-cooled boxer engine with four cylinders.

The engine began with 1.3 liters, it then developed in the course of the facelift in early summer 1983 to 1.4 and 1.5 liters. The 1.7-liter engine from the Alfa Romeo 33 was installed later .

With a production number of 121,434 pieces, the Alfasud Sprint is one of the successful models of the Alfa Romeo brand. However, rust and various defects in workmanship - as with the sedan - have often severely limited the enjoyment of owning the car.

Special models

Sprint Grand Prix

In the course of the production time, various special models were brought onto the market, which mostly differed from the series by a sporty note and whose marketing was sometimes limited to certain countries.

  • Sprint Balocco: folding sunroof, rear spoiler, decorative strips
  • Sprint Grand Prix: bumpers in body color, decorative strips
  • Sprint Quadrifoglio: green carpet, colored applications on the plastic-coated bumpers
  • Sprint Trofeo: decorative strips, color-coordinated LM rims, fog lights - with the introduction of the 1.7-liter engines

The vehicle was also popular in motorsport. The sprint achieved most successes in endurance races, hill climbs and rallies.

Trivia

A silver sprint with mint green and black rally stripes was driven by Uwe Ochsenknecht alias Kommissar Killmer in the 2nd and 3rd episode of the ARD crime thriller "Der Bulle und das Landei".
