The VW Scirocco is a three-door, 2 + 2-seater sports coupé from Volkswagen , which was built in two generations (both on the platform of the VW Golf I ) from spring 1974 to late summer 1992 . The third generation had been on the market since summer 2008 and was discontinued with the 2017 model year.

In October 1988 VW presented the VW Corrado , which should have replaced the second generation Scirocco as early as 1986. In fact, the Corrado with the type designation 53i was positioned by VW as a technology carrier and high-quality sports coupé and was produced parallel to this and beyond until the end of production of the Scirocco II in September 1992.

After a long break, the third generation of the Scirocco came onto the market in August 2008. Like the VW Golf V and Golf VI, it is technically based on the VW transverse engine platform PQ35 .

The internal VW designations are Type 53 for the Scirocco I, Type 53B for the Scirocco II and Type 13 for the Scirocco III.

Model history

Emergence

While he was in charge of developing the VW Golf, the designer Giorgio Giugiaro came up with the idea of creating a sports coupé on its basis. He got in touch with the body manufacturer Karmann and presented the VW board with the first drafts of the coupé as the successor to the VW Karmann-Ghia Type 14 . For economic reasons, the board refused to participate financially, so that Karmann made the entire investment for the construction of the vehicle on his own. Giugiaro designed the body; Similarities with the Alfa Romeo Alfasud Sprint , which was also designed by Giugiaro at the same time, are therefore no coincidence. Karmann manufactured all models of the VW Scirocco I and II in Osnabrück . In agreement with the VW group management board, the vehicle was given the model designation " Scirocco ". The name refers to a hot desert wind that blows from the Sahara towards the Mediterranean.

Model overview

In autumn 1971, the VW product planning decided on the basis of the EA 337 - the first Gulf  - an attractively priced coupe on the market position, the VW Scirocco I . Under the abbreviation EA 398 (EA: development order), Karmann in Osnabrück received the order to develop the later VW Scirocco I. The body shape was designed by Giorgio Giugiaro .

The drafts for the second-generation VW Scirocco II began as early as the mid-1970s . The new Scirocco II (VW internal designation Type 53B) was also based on the Golf I. Two basic requirements had to be met: a more aerodynamic body and more space for passengers and luggage.

The VW Scirocco III is a 2 + 2-seater station wagon with front-wheel drive that was first presented to the public in spring 2008 at the Geneva Motor Show, after Volkswagen first presented the Iroc concept vehicle in August 2006. The VW internal name of the Scirocco III is "Type 13". He was employed by the Volkswagen subsidiary VW Autoeuropa - Automóveis Lda. ( GmbH ) in Quinta do Anjo ( Palmela district ) in Portugal , where VW Eos , VW Sharan and Seat Alhambra are also built.
