The Volkswagen Passat (NMS) is a mid -range passenger car model for North America, China and South Korea that is cheaper to manufacture than the European Passat and can be offered at lower prices. The designation "NMS" stands for New Midsize Sedan and is only used to distinguish it from the European model, but is not an official part of the name.
As there are different consumer expectations in relation to automobile use in the United States, for example because there are no roads without a speed limit, Volkswagen decided to build another version of the Passat for this market. The lower price is achieved, among other things, through a simpler construction and poorer processing, which is particularly evident in the rear.
The series is built by both the US Volkswagen Group of America Chattanooga Operations and the Chinese automobile manufacturer SAIC-Volkswagen . The European Passat B6 , Passat B7 and Passat B8 are available in China as VW Magotan parallel to the NMS Passat. In contrast to the Passat (NMS), the Magotan is built by FAW-Volkswagen .

US version
The Passat was offered in the United States from 2011 to 2019. The starting price of the model produced in Chattanooga , Tennessee was 20,845 US dollars (around 16,300 euros net) in 2012 , which is well below the price of the European model, which is available from 24,775 euros (20,819 euros net).
The engine range initially comprised a 2.0-liter turbodiesel with direct injection and 103 kW (140 PS), a 2.5-liter petrol engine with five cylinders and 125 kW (170 PS) and a VR6 petrol engine with 3.6 liters Displacement and 206 kW (280 PS). During the 2014 model year, the 2.5-liter engine was replaced by a turbocharged petrol engine with a displacement of 1.8 liters and also 125 kW (170 hp), but slightly higher torque.
In September 2015, Volkswagen presented a revision of the US version. Among other things, this brought an appearance more closely oriented towards the European variant and various modernizations. In the wake of the VW emissions scandal , the diesel engine was omitted.
China version
In China, the Passat was manufactured at the plant in Nanjing for the Chinese and South Korean markets from 2011 . The engines used were 1.4, 1.8 and 2.0 TSI gasoline engines as well as a 3.0 liter VR6. At the same time, the European Passat is also offered in China. This is called Magotan there .

2nd generation
Despite the visual similarity, the US version built in Chattanooga and the China version built in Nanjing are two completely different models of the second generation. While the US Passat continues to build on the platform of the previous model, the China Passat now uses the more modern MQB platform . The Passat has not been offered in South Korea since 2019.

Volkswagen presented the version for the 2020 model year in January 2019 at the North American International Auto Show . Technically, the model differs only slightly from the previous model. However, all bodywork elements except the roof have been visually revised. At the market launch in summer 2019, only the two-liter petrol engine with 130 kW (177 hp) that was already known from the previous model was available.

The second generation was presented in China in October 2018. In contrast to the previous model and also the second generation in the United States, this variant is now based on the modular transverse matrix. The wheelbase is identical to the third generation of the Magotan, although it slightly surpasses this in other dimensions. The motors are also used in the Magotan. As with the Magotan, a plug-in hybrid drive has also been available in the Passat NMS since December 2019 .
