Lars Christian Olsen (born February 2, 1961 in Glostrup ) is a former Danish football player and current coach . He has been coaching the Faroese national team since 2011 . In 1992 he led the Danish national team as team captain to the European title.

Player career

His playing career began in 1980 with Glostrup IF 32 . This was followed by a three-year season at Køge BK and in 1985 a move to Brøndby IF , where Olsen played until the 1991/92 season and with which he won the Danish championship in 1985 , 1987 , 1988 , 1990 and 1991 . In 1988 he was voted Footballer of the Year in Denmark .

Olsen then appeared internationally: with the Turkish first division side Trabzonspor (1991/92), with which he won the Turkish cup competition , with the Belgian first division side RFC Seraing (1992–1994) and in the Swiss Super League at FC Basel (1994–1996) . He ended his playing career at Brøndby IF with two championship titles in the 1995/96 and 1996/97 seasons .

National player

Lars Olsen made his debut in the Danish national team on April 9, 1986 , when he was allowed to play the entire game in the 3-0 defeat in Sofia against Bulgaria . Lars Olsen appeared in 84 games for the national team and scored four goals. He took part in the European Championship in 1992, where his team surprisingly won the title. On April 24, 1996, Olsen came to his last appearance for the national team, when he was in the 2-0 victory in a friendly against Scotland in Copenhagen in the starting line-up and was not substituted.

Coaching career

1997 Olsen entered the coaching business. For five years he was assistant coach at his old club Brøndby IF until 2002, before he won the Danish Cup in 2006 when he was head coach at the second division Randers FC . This achievement was rewarded in 2007 with the election of Denmark's coach of the year (Årets fodboldtræner) . In the same year he moved to Odense BK , whose team he helped once to a fourth place ( 2007/08 ) and twice to the runner-up ( 2008/09 and 2009/10 ). Even so, he was released in September 2010. After a one-year break, he was hired in September 2011 as coach of the national team of the Faroe Islands , which was previously headed by Irish Brian Kerr . Under his leadership, Greece was defeated in both games in qualifying for the 2016 European Championship in France . On October 28, 2019, Lars Olsen became the new head coach of Esbjerg fB . He announced his resignation on June 9, 2020.
