Christian Bjørnshøj Poulsen (born February 28, 1980 in Asnæs on Zealand ) is a former Danish football player and today's coach . He was mostly used as a midfielder .

In his active career he was under contract with clubs in Denmark, Germany, Spain, Italy, England, France and the Netherlands. He played 92 games for the Danish national team and ended his active career at the end of 2016.

Youth and early career

Poulsen started playing football in 1985 at Asnæs BK . After the stopover at Holbæk B&I , where he became team captain at the age of 17 , he went to FC Copenhagen in 2000 , with whom he won the Danish championship in 2001. Eliminated in the Champions League qualification against Lazio Rome , Poulsen continued to play with FC Copenhagen in the UEFA Cup . There they were eliminated from the later finalists Borussia Dortmund . At the end of the 2001/02 season Poulsen was runner-up with FC Copenhagen; the final in the Danish Cup competition was lost 2-1 to Odense BK . Thus Poulsen did not succeed in winning a title with FC Copenhagen.

FC Schalke 04

Shortly after the UEFA Cup game between FC Copenhagen and Poulsen against Borussia Dortmund, Dortmund expressed an interest in Poulsen. However, the negotiations between Copenhagen and Dortmund failed because of the transfer fee to be paid for the player. Later, Poulsen decided to move to Borussia Dortmund's arch-rivals FC Schalke 04 , which took place in the 2002/03 season .

He made his debut for Schalke 04 on the first matchday of the new season, in which Schalke 04 finished seventh in the table; Poulsen came to 24 missions and scored one goal. In the 2004/05 season he was runner-up with Schalke.

During his 4 years at Schalke, Poulsen was a regular part of the regular formation and made 111 appearances in the Bundesliga. He also played 23 games in the UEFA Cup and six more in the Champions League , in which he scored three goals.

Sevilla FC

For the 2006/07 season, Poulsen moved to Sevilla FC , who had previously won the UEFA Cup . Previously, Villarreal had released Poulsen from a preliminary contract. For the discharge, 850,000 euros had to be paid. Poulsen won the UEFA Cup on May 16, 2007 with Sevilla FC , thus defending their title, and on June 23, 2007 the Copa del Rey after beating Getafe FC 1-0 in the final .

Juventus Turin

For the 2008/09 season Christian Poulsen moved for 9.75 million euros to the Italian record champions Juventus Turin , where he signed a four-year contract. On August 31, 2008 he made his debut for Juventus in Serie A on matchday one against ACF Florence in the starting eleven. In his first season , Poulsen came on 23 appearances and scored one goal. With the Turin team, Poulsen was runner-up. In the following season he was used for Juve in 25 games. In the Champions League 2009/10 Poulsen was used in five games, he was also used in the second leg of the second leg against Fulham .

Liverpool FC

In August 2010, Poulsen moved for around five million euros to the English club Liverpool , where he played again under Roy Hodgson , his coach from FC Copenhagen. After the coaching change from Hodgson to Kenny Dalglish Poulsen lost his regular place. He was only used in twelve Premier League games for Liverpool .

FC Evian Thonon Gaillard

At the end of August 2011 he moved to the French Ligue 1 and signed with newly promoted Évian Thonon Gaillard FC ; the contract ran until the end of the season. In Évian Poulsen came to 24 missions and finished with the club in ninth place in the table.

Ajax Amsterdam

In August 2012, Poulsen moved to Ajax Amsterdam , where three Danish compatriots played with Christian Eriksen , Nicolai Boilesen and Lasse Schöne . He made his debut for the Dutch record champions on September 15, 2012 in the Eredivisie against RKC Waalwijk and was in the starting eleven. Poulsen stayed with Ajax for two years and was used there as a regular player. In the 2012/13 season he came on 25, in the 2013/14 season on 29 missions (one goal). In both seasons he won the Dutch championship with Ajax.

Return to FC Copenhagen

In September 2014 Poulsen returned to FC Copenhagen. On October 19, 2014, he made his debut in a 1-0 win on matchday 11 against Randers FC when he came on for Nicolai Jørgensen in the 88th minute . In the 2014/15 season he was used for FC Copenhagen 16 times, scoring one goal. At the end of the season he left FC Copenhagen. Since then he has been without a club. On December 29, 2016, Poulsen ended his active career.

National team

On November 10, 2001, Poulsen made his debut in the Danish national team in a 1-1 draw in Copenhagen against the Netherlands in the starting eleven. For the national team he came to 92 internationals and scored six goals. Poulsen took the national team at the 2002 World Cup , the 2004 European Cup and the 2010 World Cup and at Euro 2012 in part. The last group game of the European Championship finals 2012 on June 17, 2012 against Germany was his last game for the Danish national team.

In August 2012 he resigned from the national team.

Career as a coach

In September 2018 Christian Poulsen started an internship with the professional team at Ajax Amsterdam. He later got a permanent position and thus finally joined the coaching team; For the 2019/20 season, Christian Poulsen became the new assistant coach under head coach Erik ten Hag .
