Michael Laudrup (born June 15, 1964 in Frederiksberg ) is a former Danish football player and current coach .

During his playing career, he was considered one of the best playmakers in the world. He has been a member of the Danish Sports Hall of Fame since 2007 . His father Finn , younger brother Brian, and uncle Ebbe Skovdahl were also professional footballers. His sons Mads and Andreas are also active in professional football.

Career as a player

Laudrup played his first league game in 1982 as a 17-year-old for Brøndby IF and scored 15 goals in 24 games in his first season. He was signed by Juventus Turin in the summer of 1983 . Since at that time each Serie A club was only allowed to have two foreign players in their squad and Juventus already had two foreign players under contract with Michel Platini and Zbigniew Boniek , he was loaned to the newly promoted Lazio Rome for a year . There he became a regular player immediately, scored two goals in his first Serie A game against Hellas Verona and held the class with his team in the 1983/84 season. In the summer of 1984 Juventus loaned him to Lazio for another year. After this season, the club was relegated to the Serie B from. During his time at Lazio, Laudrup played in all 60 league games. In the summer of 1985 he finally went to Juventus Turin and won the Italian championship and the World Cup in the 1985/86 season .

After three years, he moved to Spain for FC Barcelona in 1989 . There he won his second international title in 1992 when he won the European Cup . In 36 league games he scored 13 goals as a playmaker. All championships from 1991 to 1995 went to either FC Barcelona or Real Madrid , to which he moved in 1994. Laudrup won the title four times with Barcelona, ​​once with Real Madrid.

After two years in the Spanish capital, he moved to the 1996/97 season in the Japanese J. League to Vissel Kobe . After a year he went to Ajax Amsterdam in the Netherlands . The 1997/98 season was to be his last season. Laudrup won with the Ajax Cup and championship and scored eleven goals in 21 games this season. He had won the championship title in three different countries with four different clubs.

National team

Laudrup made 104 international appearances for the Danish national team between 1982 and 1998 . On his 18th birthday he made his debut in the national team and scored one goal in the game against Norway , his first of a total of 37. Due to a conflict with national coach Richard Møller Nielsen , he was not in the squad for the 1992 European Championship , making him the most important missed international title for the Danes. In 1995 he won the Confederation Cup after a 2-0 win in the final against Argentina ; Laudrup achieved the interim 1-0 lead. After losing in the quarter-finals of the 1998 World Cup against Brazil , he ended his career.

Career as a coach

Laudrup began his coaching career in 2000 as an assistant coach to the Danish national team at Morten Olsen's side . From 2002 to 2006 he was together with John Jensen coach of the Danish club Brøndby IF , with which he won the Danish Cup in 2003 and the Cup and the championship of the SAS League in 2005. In May 2006 Laudrup resigned together with Jensen after they had not been able to agree on a contract extension with Brøndby. This had failed primarily because of the different salary expectations of both parties.

From July 2007 to June 2008 Laudrup was Bernd Schuster's successor as coach of the Spanish first division club Getafe . From September 2008 to April 2009 he coached the Russian club Spartak Moscow , from 2010 he was coach at RCD Mallorca . After a dispute with the club management, he resigned on September 27, 2011. For the 2012/13 season pledged Swansea City Laudrup as head coach. He signed a two-year contract and succeeded Brendan Rodgers , who had moved to Liverpool . Laudrup was released in February 2014.

Subsequently, in the summer of 2014, he signed a one-year contract with the Qatari master Lekhwiya and piloted former protégés like José Manuel Flores to Qatar. After he was again champion with the Qatar in the 2014/15 season and had won the Qatar Crown Prince Cup and the Sheikh Jassim Cup with the club , he did not extend his contract, which expired in the summer.
