Kim Vilfort (born November 15, 1962 in Copenhagen , Denmark ) is a former Danish football player and current youth coordinator at Brøndby IF . With the Danish national team he won the European championship in 1992 . In the final, he scored a goal for a 2-0 win over Germany .

He spent most of his career at Brøndby IF, with whom he won seven championship titles. With a total of 110 goals scored in competitive games for Brøndby, he is the club's record scorer.

Club career

Career start

Vilfort started his career in the youth of Skovlunde IF. In 1981 he signed his first contract for the first team with the then second division club BK Frem Copenhagen . Committed as a striker, he was retrained as an attacking midfielder at Frem, which did not change his goal risk. In his first season he scored 15 goals this season before he scored the club with 25 goals in what was then the 1st division the following season .

In the 1st division his ascent continued rapidly. With 19 goals he was second behind Vilhelm Munk Nielsen on the scorers list and advanced to the Danish national team . With the club he managed confidently to stay in the league. Two more seasons followed with a total of 23 goals before he moved to France to Lille OSC in July 1985 .

Lille OSC

With the French medium-sized company at the time, his goal risk was almost completely lost. In the strongly defensive team (only Bernard Bureau could score more than six goals), his offensive strength did not come into its own. Lille managed with this system the good tenth place in the table, but Vilfort was dissatisfied and pushed for a return to Denmark.

After only one year in France, he signed with Brøndby IF in July 1986 , where he stayed until the end of his career. Over the years it has become an indispensable institution in the midfield of the club.

Living legend at Brøndby

In the first season he set his first fragrance brand for the club in the 1986/87 European Cup . Brøndby made it to the quarter-finals thanks to two important goals from Vilfort against BFC Dynamo , where they only failed against eventual winners FC Porto . In the league they were runner- up behind Aarhus GF .

With the commitment of Peter Schmeichel in the 1987 season, Brøndby then advanced to the ultimate in the Danish league. The squad peppered with players like Schmeichel im Tor, the then star strikers Claus Nielsen and Bent Christensen , young star Brian Laudrup , John Jensen in defensive midfield and Vilfort in offensive midfield is still considered one of the strongest in the Danish club's history. Except for the 1989 season, in which they had to admit defeat to the surprise team Odense BK , three points behind , they were the measure of all things in Denmark and won the championship title each time.

In the 1990/91 UEFA Cup , they once again caused a sensation at European level. After victories against the favored Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Torpedo Moscow , they even reached the semi-finals of the competition, in which they had to admit defeat to AS Roma with an overall result of 1: 2. Vilfort was considered the team's outstanding player and was named Danish Player of the Year after the season .

Due to the success, the stars of the team became interesting for clubs from half of Europe, which led to the breakup of the team after the 1991 season, from which Brøndby could not recover for years.

If the departure of Brian Laudrup to Bayer Uerdingen was still well compensated by the new young star Ronnie Ekelund, this was no longer possible in the case of the departures of Schmeichel, Christensen, Jensen and Frank Pingel. Of the established players, only Vilfort remained loyal to the club. The talents Jes Høgh and Marc Rieper brought in to replace Aalborg BK and the up-and-coming Søren Colding from Frem Copenhagen had great potential, but could not call it up for the time being. As a consequence, the team finished fourth in the table in the 1991/92 season.

When they lost the most promising young professional to FC Barcelona in the 1992/93 season, Ekelund , they expected the team to collapse completely. The young team was also able to avert this due to an outstanding Vilfort, who with ten goals this season was able to book his best scoring in Brøndby's dress. They even improved to third place in the table.

With the commitment of Dan Eggen for the 1993/94 season, there was a significant increase in the quality of the team. They found themselves in the battle for the championship again over the season and finally won a title again after four years by winning the Danish Cup.

In the 1994/95 season they were again favorite for the title and had realistic chances of winning the championship until the last round. In a dramatic season finale, however, they had to admit defeat to local rivals FC Copenhagen with 0: 1, whereupon Aalborg BK , who won 4-0 in the same game against Aarhus GF , were able to celebrate the championship title with a two point lead. In the European Cup Winners' Cup , they were eliminated in the second main round with an aggregate result of 2: 3 against Arsenal FC .

In the 1995/96 season, the team was finally able to win the championship title in Denmark again after five years and also caused a sensation in the UEFA Cup . After they eliminated FK Inkaras Kaunas with an overall result of 6-0 and the Norwegians from Lillestrøm SK 3-0 in the first two rounds , it came to a duel with the English top club Liverpool FC . In the home game they made a much-noticed 0-0 against the overwhelming opponent from England, before advancing to the next round with a 1-0 win at the time-honored Anfield in Liverpool. In the third main round of the competition AS Roma were drawn, which they could also defeat 2-1 in the home game. After a tough fight in the second leg, which was lost 3-1, they were eliminated from the competition, but the rise against Liverpool is still regarded as one of the highlights in the club's history.

In the 1996/97 season, the supremacy in Denmark was prolonged and again became the superior champions with a 14 point lead. After the breakup of the successful team at the beginning of the decade, it was again possible to put together a well-functioning team around the Eggen - Jensen - Nielsen - Vilfort - Sand player base , which dominated the league. It was also possible to set some accents at the European level. Although they failed in qualifying for the Champions League after an aggregate result of 4: 4 due to the away goals rule to Widzew Łódź , they then moved into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup after victories against FC Aarau and FC Aberdeen and two outstanding games against the favored Karlsruher SC Competition one. There they lost to the CD Tenerife, trained by Jupp Heynckes , after a 1-0 home win with an overall result of 2-0.

After the 1997/98 season, Vilfort ended his career after winning his seventh championship. He had previously scored the 1-0 winning goal against Odense BK in the last game of the season . At the end of his career he was the player with the second most league appearances for Brøndby with 470 games behind Bjarne Jensen. With 78 league goals, he is also in second place behind Bent Christensen in the club's all-time goalscorer list. If you add up all competitive goals, he is even number one on the all-time goalscorer list with 110.

After the end of his career, he took over the post of youth coordinator at Brøndby, which he still holds today.

Together with John Jensen, he is seen as the identity figure of Brøndby IF . During his time with the club, he achieved such popularity that Brøndby Stadium is referred to by fans as the "Vilfort Stadium" .

National team

Even as a Skovlunde player he was used in the Danish U-17 and U-19 selection. at BK Frem Copenhagen he was promoted to U-21 in 1982 and also to senior national team in 1983 .

Although he was now part of the extended national team, he was not included in his country's final squads for the 1984 European Championship and 1986 World Cup

He only played his first major tournament in 1988 as a member of the Danish squad for the 1988 European Championships in Germany . In the very outdated team around players like Søren Lerby , Preben Elkjær Larsen or Morten Olsen , he was used in the preliminary round matches against Germany and Italy . Denmark was eliminated with three defeats, sang and soundless already in the preliminary round, which caused a change in the team.

In 1992 he made with Denmark during the European Championship 1992 in Sweden for one of the biggest sensations of the European Championship history when one of the disqualified Yugoslav team as a replacement team without preparation nachrückte and sensationally became European Champion after having performed the Favorites France , The Netherlands and in the final Germany (2 : 0) defeated. Vilfort became a Danish legend in the final when he scored the all-important goal to a 2-0 victory in the 78th minute.

In 1996 he played his last major tournament, the 1996 European Championship . Starting as the defending champion, however, you had to admit defeat again in the preliminary round Portugal and Croatia . Vilfort completed two preliminary round matches.

After the tournament, Vilfort ended his national team career after 77 international matches with 14 goals in order to concentrate exclusively on his club.
