Dan Eggen (born January 13, 1970 in Copenhagen , Denmark ) is a former Norwegian soccer player and current coach of the Norwegian women's soccer team Kolbotn IL. Away from football, he works as the manager of the Norwegian rock band El Caco .

He is one of only six players in the history of the Norwegian Football Association who have played for the national team without ever being under contract with a local professional team. In the course of his career he took part in two world championships ( 1994 & 1998 ) and one European championship ( 2000 ). In 2001 he played in the UEFA Cup final with Alavés against Liverpool .

Due to his extraordinary career and his unconventional lifestyle for a professional soccer player, he is considered one of the most colorful personalities in Norwegian soccer.

Club career

Career start in Norway

The son of a Norwegian and a Danish woman began his career in the youth of his home club Lyn Oslo . After his breakthrough as a professional player at Lyn was denied, he switched to the traditional IF Ready Oslo , which at that time was in the insignificance of the fourth Norwegian league. At that time, Eggen said he had no ambitions for professional football.

Frem København

In 1991, however, after a trial training session, he had the opportunity to move to his mother's home country and at the same time to move to BK Frem København in his home town . No great hopes were placed in Denmark in the then completely unknown legionnaire. The club itself had signed him as a substitute for the defense. In his first year, however, he surprised as a dangerous defender and won a regular place at the end of the season.

In the 1991/92 season, the player's performance exploded. Together with the then highly regarded defense talent Peter Frank Andersen , he formed a defensive bulwark, which caused a sensation in Denmark. Eggen also made a name for himself with his strong offensive urge. In total, he scored 6 goals this season as a central defender. Frem finished third in the Superliga and qualified for the UEFA Cup.

In the 1992/93 season the total collapse of the team followed. They managed only three wins in the main round and occupied the penultimate place in the table with just 14 points, which meant they had to go to the qualifying round. There they made 23 points in 14 games, but missed relegation as third place behind Ikast FS and Viborg FF . In the UEFA Cup , the Swiss representative Neuchâtel Xamax could still be eliminated in the first main round , but was then eliminated against Real Saragossa with an overall result of 1: 6.

With the exception of Søren Colding and Eggen, who once again proved his offensive strength with five goals in the main round and 3 in the qualifying round, the team was in no way able to meet expectations. After relegation, many regular players were sold out. With the exception of Colding, almost the entire tribe left the club.

Eggen, traded as the hottest transfer share by Frem, then signed with the Danish top team Brøndby IF .

Brøndby IF

At Brøndby he immediately received next to Jes Høgh a regular place in central defense, which he held over four and a half seasons. In the first season they then missed the title in the Superligaen with six points behind master Silkeborg IF . In return, Eggen celebrated his first title win by winning the Danish Cup.

In the 1994/95 season they were once again favorite for the title and had realistic chances of winning the championship until the last round. In a dramatic season finale, however, they had to admit defeat to local rivals FC København 0: 1, whereupon Aalborg BK , who won 4-0 in the game against Aarhus GF at the same time , were still able to celebrate the championship title with a two-point lead. In the European Cup Winners' Cup , they were eliminated in the second main round with an aggregate result of 2: 3 against Arsenal FC .

The 1995/96 season then developed to be by far the most successful in Eggen's career. With Brøndby, he was finally able to win the championship title in Denmark again after five years and caused a sensation with the club in the UEFA Cup . After they eliminated FK Inkaras Kaunas with an overall result of 6-0 and the Norwegians from Lillestrøm SK 3-0 in the first two rounds , it came to a duel with the English top club Liverpool FC . In the home game they made a much-noticed 0-0 against the overwhelming opponent from England, before advancing to the next round with a 1-0 win at the time-honored Anfield in Liverpool. Eggen was the goalscorer for the win with a header, making him something of a living legend for Brøndby fans. In the third main round of the competition AS Roma were drawn, which they could also defeat 2-1 in the home game. After a tough fight in the second leg, which was lost 3-1, they were eliminated from the competition, but the rise against Liverpool is still regarded as one of the highlights in the club's history.

In the 1996/97 season, the supremacy in Denmark was prolonged and again became the superior champions with a 14 point lead. Despite many departures, they had managed to put together a well-functioning team around the Eggen - Jensen - Nielsen - Vilfort - Sand player base that dominated the league. It was also possible to set some accents at the European level. Although they failed in qualifying for the Champions League after an aggregate result of 4: 4 due to the away goals rule to Widzew Łódź , they then moved into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup after victories against FC Aarau and FC Aberdeen and two outstanding games against the favored Karlsruher SC Competition a. There they lost to the CD Tenerife, trained by Jupp Heynckes , after a 1-0 home win with an overall result of 2-0.

Eggen had made a name for itself after its strong performance at European level and in the Norwegian national team and attracted the interest of several international clubs. When various negotiations with mostly English teams failed, it seemed like he would stay with Brøndby for the 1997/98 season. After the first five games of the season, the club surprisingly came to an agreement with the then Spanish top club Celta Vigo and gave Eggen to the Galicians .

Celta de Vigo

Eggen found himself right in the new league surprisingly quickly and immediately received a regular place in central defense. The team peppered with stars such as the Russian Alexander Mostowoi , the Brazilian world champion Mazinho and the then Israeli superstar Haim Revivo started with ambitions for a European starting place in the league and had a corresponding pressure to meet the expectations. The team held up, however, and managed to qualify for the UEFA Cup as sixth in the table. Eggen was used in 23 of 38 possible games and was mostly convincing.

In the 1998/99 season , the team was able to improve again and just missed fourth place in the table with one point behind, which would have meant a qualification place for the Champions League. In the UEFA Cup , after victories over the English clubs Aston Villa and Liverpool FC, they advanced to the quarter-finals, where they had to admit defeat to eventual finalists Olympique Marseille with an aggregate result of 2-1. The season was less satisfactory for Eggen. For the first time in his career he had to struggle with several minor injuries, which he came to only 16 season appearances and lost his regular place at the end of the season to the Serb Goran Djorović .

For the 1999/2000 season he then moved to Deportivo Alavés on a free transfer , which had just barely secured relegation and went into the new season as relegation candidate number 1.

Deportivo Alavés

His first season at Alavés began as the previous one had ended. Eggen struggled with several stubborn injuries and only made eleven games this season. His team, meanwhile, developed from relegation candidate to surprise team of the year and briefly played for the title in the Primera División . At the end of the season, only three points were missing from the runner-up title and the associated qualification for the Champions League.

For the 2000/01 season Eggen was largely spared from bad luck with injuries and regained the status of a regular player. In the league, however, the club could no longer connect to the strong previous season and occupied a place in the secured midfield with table rank 10.

In the UEFA Cup , however, they once again became a surprise team and made it into the final. Among other things, Inter Milan and 1. FC Kaiserslautern were eliminated on the way to the final . The final against Liverpool developed into one of the most legendary in the history of the competition. Before the game, Eggen became a sought-after interviewee of the English press, as they wanted to use his header for Brøndby, which caused Liverpool to be eliminated from the UEFA Cup in 1995, to heat the mood. In the game, Liverpool took an early 2-0 lead through goals from Markus Babbel and Steven Gerrard . As a result, Eggen, who was involved in both goals, was substituted in the 23rd minute by Argentine striker Iván Alonso , who brought Alavés back into the game with a goal three minutes later. Eggen was slightly damaged, but ostensibly was sacrificed due to the early change in tactics and his poor performance. In the regular playing time there were four more goals before the game had to go into overtime after a result of 4: 4. There the game was decided after two red cards against Alavés by an own goal by Delfí Geli in minute 117 in favor of Liverpool.

The final should remain the last competition game that Eggen played for Alavés. During the season he sustained a knee ligament injury in a game against Real Madrid . Due to his importance for the team, he had postponed an obligatory operation and ended the season in pain. During the summer break, however, this approach took revenge after he could not get back on his feet after the necessary operation. By postponing his treatment, the knee injury had worsened and some of it was no longer possible. As a result, Eggen remained convalescent until winter 2002 and did not play a single professional game. When he had fought his way back to an acceptable fitness level in winter, the club gave its consent for a change. As a result, transfers to the Premier League to Bolton Wanderers and Southampton FC failed due to his unexplained medical condition. After a possible transfer back home to Brann Bergen failed, he completed trial training with the Glasgow Rangers .

Glasgow Rangers

Ranger coach Alex McLeish had blatant defensive concerns after a training injury of his defense chief Lorenzo Amoruso and the long-term absence of Arthur Numan and then decided to sign the French Jerome Bonnissel and Eggen for six months, despite his still poor fitness. But it didn't work out. Neither Bonnissel nor Eggen were able to help out on the Rangers' defense. If Bonnissel completed two more season appearances, Eggen was not fit at all and did not play a single minute for the Rangers.

After the half-year contract expired, the Rangers gave the player back.

Le Mans UC

In the 2003/04 season he found a new employer with the newly promoted player in the French Ligue 1 , Le Mans UC . Contrary to expectations, Eggen had regained an acceptable physical condition after three years without match practice and was given a regular place. Until the end, Le Mans played for relegation in a row, which in the end was missed with just one point on the saving 17th place in the table. Eggen, who had brought some acceptable performance over the year, then decided to go to Ligue 2 with the club .

In the 2004/05 season, however, he then only completed one game for Le Mans before he announced the end of his career. His knee injury never fully healed and Eggen had only been able to play in pain the previous season.

National team

As a Ready Oslo player, he made two appearances in the Norwegian U-18 national team as part of the Norwegian Association's youth scouting concept. As a foreign player, two more games for the Norwegian U-21 team followed in 1990 .

After moving to Brøndby, he made his surprising debut on August 11, 1993 as a relatively unknown player in Norway under national coach Egil Olsen in a friendly against the Faroese national soccer team for the senior national team .

As a result, he was not nominated for the national team until shortly before the soccer World Cup in 1994 in the United States . After a strong friendly game against Sweden in the run-up to the World Cup , in which he was able to convince, Olsen nominated him to the general surprise for the final World Cup line-up for the Norwegians.

During the tournament, in which Norway was unfortunately eliminated in the preliminary round, he was then not used in any of the three preliminary round matches.

After the 1994 World Cup, it was not until January 1997 that Eggen returned to Norway during an international trip to Australia. After he delivered strong performances in the friendlies against South Korea , New Zealand and Australia , he became the third defender behind Berg and Johnsen for qualifying for the 1998 World Cup.

During the Football World Cup in France in 1998 , Henning Berg was then surprisingly converted from an inside to a right full-back, which gave Eggen a regular place in central defense. As a result, he scored a goal in the 2-2 opening game against Morocco . After a 1-1 win against Scotland and a 2-1 win over Brazil , Norway moved into the second round of the table as second in Group A, where they lost to Italy 1-0 and were eliminated. Eggen completed all four games over the full distance.

After the World Cup, Olsen resigned and the former U-21 coach Nils Johan Semb was promoted to national coach. From then on, he forced young defenders like Vegard Heggem or Bjørn Otto Bragstad and largely avoided harrows.

It was exactly two years before Eggen returned to the national team for a friendly against Italy shortly before a major tournament, this time the European Football Championship 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands .

Due to the injury-related loss of Ronny Johnsen and Erik Hoftun , he made it again, without having played a qualifying game, in the final line-up for the tournament. When Henning Berg was injured in the opening game against Spain and was also canceled for the rest of the tournament, he became a regular again. Together with the shooting star Bragstad, he then formed the central defense for the remaining games, which only allowed a goal against Yugoslavia . Due to a weak offensive performance by the Norwegians, however, they were eliminated as third-placed in the preliminary round.

After the European Championship, he was used again on April 25, 2004 in the friendly against Bulgaria , before he was no longer considered due to his injury-related loss.

During his career he had strong competition in his position with Henning Berg, Ronny Johnsen, Erik Hoftun or Claus Lundekvam , which meant he only made 25 missions from 1993 to 2001, in which he scored two goals. Nevertheless, he was a regular in his country in two major tournaments.

Eggen is the owner of the "Golden Watch", which is awarded to every Norwegian national player who has completed 25 senior team appearances.

After the active career

After the end of his career, Eggen began studying economics at the University of Oslo , from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree. He also made his coaching license.

He is currently a partner in the Norwegian label Black Balloon Records and acts as the manager of the Norwegian rock band El Caco.

He has also been the head coach of the women's soccer team Kolbotn IL since 2009. With the team he reached the third place in the top series in the 2009 season .
