Steven George Gerrard MBE [ ˈdʒɛʀɑːd ] (born May 30, 1980 in Whiston , Knowsley ) is a former English football player and current football coach . Usually used in central midfield, he has played for Liverpool FC for a total of 26 years since childhood . He was team captain for the Reds from 2003 to 2015. On July 1, 2015 Gerrard left the club and played until November 15, 2016 in Major League Soccer for the LA Galaxy .

His greatest successes at international level were winning the UEFA Cup in 2001 and the Champions League in 2005 as well as in domestic competitions of the FA Cup (2001, 2006) and the League Cup (2001, 2003, 2012). In addition, Gerrard played as a national team player (2000-2014) three European championships ( 2000 , 2004 , 2012 ) and three world championships ( 2006 , 2010 , 2014 ). His particular strengths, in addition to his passing security and strength in duels, are his outstanding shooting technique, which allows him to score numerous hits from a great distance.

Since January 2017 he has been a youth coach at Liverpool FC. Gerrard has been the head coach of the Scottish club Glasgow Rangers since summer 2018 .

The early years

Steven Gerrard was born in late May 1980 at Whiston Hospital in Knowsley , Metropolitan County Merseyside , about ten kilometers east of Liverpool city center. As the second born after his brother Paul, he grew up in a well-protected, humble and, above all, football-loving environment. The father exemplified his great passion for Liverpool FC for the junior and consequently always supported his early steps on the sports fields. Young Steven found school a chore. He was mostly shy in the classrooms, the performance was average and the focus was on the lawns next to the buildings of St. Michael's School , which he initially attended. For the choice of the secondary Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School , besides denominational reasons, it was also important that it supported Gerrards' footballing talents. An important advantage was that he was now allowed to compete for Liverpool youth teams, which were more often reviewed by talent scouts.

Gerrard's connection to Liverpool was already established. From the age of eight he was part of the youth work with the "Reds", which was led by former player Steve Heighway . The contact was established by a Heighways employee who was good friends with the coach of the leisure team Whiston Juniors , for whom Gerrard was again playing at that time (and continued to do so). Among the early companions were later national players such as Jason Koumas and Michael Owen . Especially in interaction with Owen, the high quality of this year was already evident in Liverpool FC's U-12 games. Further confirmation seemed to follow when Gerrard, alongside Owen, Stephen Wright and Neil Murphy, was invited to audition for a two-year scholarship at what was then the national football academy in Lilleshall at the age of 14. Despite good impressions, the representatives there rejected him, unlike Owen - Gerrard's great disappointment continued to have an effect for a long time, especially since the reasons seemed primarily to be that he was quite small for his age at the time. On the other hand, renowned clubs showed him greater appreciation and in addition to specific offers from Manchester City , Everton FC and Tottenham Hotspur , Manchester United was also interested in signing. However, there was no change and Gerrard received a two-year training contract ("YTS") after the end of the U-16 season. Another "reward" for him was the nomination in the squad for the final of the FA Youth Cup in May 1996 , in which he watched the 4-1 win against West Ham United (with Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand ) from the bench.

The training in the YTS program initially stipulated that the practice units should be completed at the University of Liverpool and only later did the talents train side by side with the players from the first team at the performance center in Melwood . Jamie Redknapp developed into a special reference person for Gerrard there , mainly because he played in roughly the same position. A smooth development towards a professional squad did not take place. This was primarily due to the fact that Gerrard often struggled with injuries in his growth phase. The club wanted to refrain from a professional contract first; but after intensive discussions with Gerrard's father, the parties agreed on a three-year contract endowed with £ 700 a week for the first year, then £ 800 and finally £ 900. The progress followed at ever shorter intervals and through good performance at the beginning of the 1998/99 season in the U-19 selection of the club, he quickly came closer to the professional team. The new French coach Gérard Houllier , who joined Liverpool in the summer of 1998 and who looked after the team with Roy Evans until the beginning of November, played a major role in this . Houllier promoted Gerrard to the first-team squad and instructed the newcomer to change his diet and to do more strength exercises to prepare for professional football. In his autobiography of 2006, Gerrard criticized the fact that Houllier described himself as Gerrard's true discoverer and even said that he had "saved" the protégé from the reserve team; and he made it clear that in addition to his work in the youth academy, Evans had to be praised for his development as a professional footballer, that the contract had already been signed before Houllier's commitment and that he could hardly go unnoticed as captain of the English U-18 team.

Professional career

Way to the Liverpool legend

Shortly after taking his place on the bench in the third round of the UEFA Cup away game against Celta Vigo (3-1), Gerrard played his first Premier League game for Liverpool on November 29, 1998 when he played against Blackburn Rovers (2-0) was substituted on for Vegard Heggem in the right-back position shortly before the end . Shortly afterwards, the newcomer was in the starting line-up for the first time in the away game at Tottenham Hotspur and had to face none other than the later footballer of the year in England David Ginola in the right midfield in the 3-5-2 system . Gerrard described the duel against the French, who with Houllier to make matters worse since the missed World Cup qualification with France in 1994 still had a private account open, as a "nightmare", was overrun by this several times, had to allow numerous crosses and was still not with a substitution "redeemed". Despite this disenchantment, Houllier continued to trust him and in the second leg against Celta Vigo (0: 1) Gerrard showed his strengths for the first time in the usual central position. After the almost meaningless and with little pressure afflicted game - in addition to the defeat in the first leg, Liverpool lacked numerous top performers - Gerrard was awarded the honor of best player ("Man of the Match"). At the end of the 1998/99 season Gerrard had completed a total of twelve Premier League games, although he had only been in four games from the start. He scored his first goal for Liverpool on December 5, 1999 against Sheffield Wednesday at the beginning of a 1999/2000 season in which Gerrard made his sporting breakthrough into the English senior team. In addition to his flexible appearances, in which he also helped out on the two full-back positions and in the right midfield, the performances in the central midfield were particularly noticeable, with which he even competed with team captain Jamie Redknapp - whose signs were again due to injury in the following year. With his ability to conquer the balls from his own half and then initiate offensive actions either with quick steps or with safe passing play, as well as his "doggedness" in a duel, he stylistically reminded of the former Liverpool "European Cup hero" Graeme Souness .

The 2000/01 season brought Gerrard and Liverpool FC the “triple cup” of the FA Cup , League Cup and UEFA Cup and - significantly more important for the financial situation - with third place in the Premier League, the longed-for qualification and access to the “money pots” of the Champions League . The 35-year-old Gary McAllister , who was engaged in July 2000, was of great importance to Gerrard , through whom he - like Dietmar Hamann - was partly pushed into the unloved right midfield, but who at the same time taught him other facets in terms of game intelligence and overview. The League Cup started the series when Gerrard formed midfield center with Hamann in the final against Birmingham City on February 25, 2001 , before being substituted for McAllister at 1-0 in the 78th minute - the game went after a late one 1: 1 to penalties. Gerrard attributed the greatest importance of the three titles to the subsequent FA Cup success when Liverpool FC turned a 0-1 deficit into a 2-1 win at the Millennium Stadium against a superior Arsenal FC and Gerrard faced a direct duel the highly respected Patrick Vieira claimed. Gerrard's first international title followed four days later. In the Dortmund UEFA Cup final he defeated the Spanish surprise team Deportivo Alavés with the "Reds" after an exciting game including a golden goal decision 5: 4 and contributed the goal to the 2-0 intermediate result. At the end of the successful 2000/01 season, in which Gerrard had managed a total of ten competitive goals, the club management offered him a long-term contract for six years. After brief negotiations, the parties agreed on a term of four years and a new weekly salary of £ 50,000.

In his first Champions League season 2001/02 , Gerrard moved up to the quarter-finals, in which he was eliminated with Liverpool after a 1-0 first leg win and subsequent 2: 4 defeat in Leverkusen - he lost the goal to make it 0-1 against Michael Ballack a mistake. Further progress was made in the Premier League and 80 points meant the runner-up behind Arsenal FC. The problem with Gerrard, however, had turned out to be the unbridled duel behavior, which had earned him a red card in September 2001 after a foul with both legs in George Boateng of Aston Villa . Even as a teenager, he had worked with a sports psychologist on his attitude towards this, but always understood the toughness to be “part of his game”. The next high-profile incident occurred in December 2002; Unfortunately for here was Gary Naysmith from Everton . Although it started with high hopes and dreams of the title, the 2002/03 season was disappointing for Gerrard and even ended with a failure to qualify for the Champions League again with fifth place . Responsible for this were the expensive wrong purchases for almost a total of 18 million, of which Salif Diao , Bruno Cheyrou and above all the Senegalese international El Hadji Diouf , who was celebrated after the 2002 World Cup (employed the loan player Nicolas Anelka classified as "difficult" ) all disappointed, as well as Gerrard's inconsistent achievements, which he later justified with mental problems due to the looming divorce of his parents. The only sporting highlight was the league cup success on March 2, 2003, in the final of which Gerrard even scored the first goal to win the 2-0 final against arch-rivals Manchester United. In October 2003, Gerrard replaced the Finn Sami Hyypiä as captain of Liverpool FC and under new leadership the "Reds" at least won the runner-up again , which could not hide the fact that the gap to the title holder FC Arsenal was 30 points. Houllier era ”was coming to an end and Gerrard also asked himself questions about his future in sport. Since a move to Manchester United seemed impossible from the start due to the special rivalry, Chelsea FC emerged as the next station, which under the new financially strong owner Roman Abramowitsch had built a top-class team since 2003 and from 2004 hired a renowned coach in José Mourinho , who in turn was very interested in the Liverpool captain. The negotiations dragged on over the 2004 European Championship tournament in Portugal . The move then failed because Gerrard decided at the last moment to stay in Liverpool. The fact that Houllier's successor Rafael Benítez was able to convince him of his concept for the sporting future during a stay in the English team quarters had also contributed to this .

On the initiative of Benítez, Gerrard's game was expanded to include a facet in which the former midfielder should now optionally try as an attacking player. It was helpful that Benítez and Xabi Alonso provided reinforcement in the central midfield, who, together with Hamann, should ensure the necessary freedom in the captain's game. The 2004/05 season was in many ways of great emotional value for Gerrard. It began with the great disappointment when his good childhood friend Michael Owen left the club for Real Madrid , but then developed numerous sporting highlights, especially in the Champions League . Already in the group stage, the end was threatened when Liverpool FC needed three goals to advance after a 0-1 halftime score in the last game against Olympiacos Piraeus and Gerrard himself scored four minutes before the end to make it 3-1. After further victories against Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus Turin and FC Chelsea , he and his team faced AC Milan in Istanbul . In a memorable game, the "Reds" were already 3-0 down at halftime, before Gerrard moved forward after adding midfielder Hamann for defender Steve Finnan (and at the same time switching to a three-way defensive chain). This measure paid off insofar as the captain reduced it to 1: 3 in the 54th minute and after another goal by Vladimír Šmicer took a penalty in the 60th minute, which Xabi Alonso converted to 3: 3 with a margin. When “Milan” replaced Serginho shortly before the end of the 90 minutes , Gerrard again took up a different position and dueled the fast Brazilian as right-back until the end of extra time. In the penalty shootout, Gerrard was scheduled to be the fifth shooter; However, he did not have to compete, as the Milanese Serginho, Andrea Pirlo and Andrij Shevchenko had previously missed decisively. Gerrard had less luck - also due to the strong focus on the Champions League - in the Premier League with place 5 and in the league cup final against FC Chelsea (2-3 a. V.), in which Gerrard even suffered an own goal mishap. This “flaw” did not stop the European Football Association from naming Gerrard UEFA Club Footballer of the Year in 2005 . - Later that year, the prestigious French magazine France Football voted him in November 2005, behind Ronaldinho and Frank Lampard, as Europe's third best player of the year .

Gerrard in the 6-3 victory in the league game against Cardiff City in March 2014

In the following season 2005/06 Gerrard confirmed his new found attacking player qualities and scored a total of 23 competitive goals. Benítez 'decision for the central midfield to also sign Mohamed Sissoko and to move Gerrard into the right midfield, with extensive freedom to push forward, had contributed to this. His contribution to the FA Cup final was decisive , shortly after his fellow Premier League players voted him England's Footballer of the Year . In the final against West Ham United , he first scored two goals to 3: 3, including another spectacular long-range goal in stoppage time of regular time, which saved the "Reds" in extra time. Ultimately, Liverpool had the upper hand on penalties and Gerrard converted his penalty. The next sporting highlight for Gerrard in 2007 was reaching the Champions League final against AC Milan, which was lost 2-1 - Gerrard had given a good chance in front of Dida . Previously, in April 2007, he had scored his 15th goal in the premier class against PSV Eindhoven, surpassing the previous European cup record for Ian Rush's club . In the Premier League he again missed the "big hit" with Liverpool FC and was only third, although the critical voices that Gerrard's new role was not ideal, increased again. Gerrard's response to that was another 2007-08 season full of highlights. With 21 competitive goals - including a series of nine goals in ten games - the "midfield dynamo" enabled his club to participate in the semi-finals in the Champions League ; important "hits" with a high psychological impact were his goal to make it 2-0 in the first leg of the last sixteen against Inter Milan in the "last second" and in the subsequent quarter-final against Arsenal, when he scored in the second leg (after a 1-1 draw in London) with his penalty to make it 3 : 2 in the 85th minute kept his nerve. In the final stages of the Premier League , Gerrard mostly acted alongside Fernando Torres as “second top” and secured fourth place for the club against up-and-coming local rivals from Everton. Gerrard continued to be in top form in a 2008/09 season that catapulted him to third place in the national goalscoring standings with 16 league goals and once again earned him the title of England's Footballer of the Year - in contrast to three years earlier now in the Journalists' choice - and in July 2009 he signed another contract extension until the end of the 2012/13 season. Unlike in previous years, Gerrard was a contender with Liverpool FC to win the English championship until the end, but 86 points were just below Manchester United with 90 points. In the Champions League , Liverpool failed as last year at Chelsea. The main reason for this was the 3-1 home defeat in the quarter-final first leg , in which Gerrard revealed major problems against Michael Essien , which were presumably also due to injury problems - Gerrard was then missing for a longer period, including in the second leg (4: 4). Personal success was his 100th goal for Liverpool on October 1, 2008 against Eindhoven.

Injury worries continued into the 2009/10 season and although he was again the club's second-best goalscorer with twelve goals, the performances did not match those of the past four to five years. The reason for this was also the departure of Xabi Alonso, who with his passing game had been the ideal complement for Gerrard in his forays into the top next to Torres, who was unfortunately often absent again. Gerrard's game lacked the usual dynamic and Liverpool FC ended in a disappointing seventh place in the Premier League .

In the 2013/14 season , Liverpool played for the title again after a long time. Gerrard scored 13 goals in 34 games this season. On the 36th match day, Liverpool could have brought about a preliminary decision for the first championship in 24 years against Chelsea . Ironically, captain Gerrard, who never became champions during his time at Liverpool, initiated the 2-0 home defeat with a mistake that resulted in Demba Ba's 0-1 loss just before half-time. Champion was Manchester City ; Liverpool FC qualified second for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in five years .

On January 2, 2015, Gerrard announced that he would not renew his contract, which expired at the end of the 2014/15 season , and that he would leave the club after 26 years - 17 of them as a professional.

On April 25, 2015, Gerrard completed his 500th league game for Liverpool in the Premier League . Only his former teammate Jamie Carragher (508 games) and former Manchester United player Ryan Giggs (672) achieved this symbolic mark before him .

In his final season for Liverpool, Gerrard made 41 competitive appearances and was the top scorer of his team with 13 goals in all competitions. Even so, the season was disappointing for Liverpool, as they only finished sixth in the league and were eliminated in all cup competitions.

Change to the MLS

After his contract in Liverpool expired, Gerrard moved to the US Major League Soccer for LA Galaxy on July 1, 2015 .

He played his first competitive game for the Galaxy on July 18, 2015 against San José Earthquakes , which was won 5-2. Gerrard achieved the interim equalization to 2-2, and he prepared two more goals. Throughout the 2015 season , Gerrard made 13 regular season appearances (one goal) and one use in the play-offs, in which they had to admit defeat to the Seattle Sounders in the first round . At the end of the season, Gerrard returned to Liverpool at the end of November 2015 and took part in training there under Jürgen Klopp , but returned to the United States. After 18 months in Major League Soccer and the expiry of his contract, he left the LA Galaxy on November 15, 2016. In three years Gerrard made 34 appearances, five goals and 14 assists .

In the national team

Gerrard (2012)

Mainly because of the fact that he was not considered for the national academy in Lilleshall, Gerrard's international career did not begin in the English U-15 team, but only on February 3, 1996 in the U-16 team. Here he came on for the first time against Denmark and the next meeting with Ireland shortly thereafter - with the opponent were players like Richard Dunne and Stephen McPhail - Gerrard was not only in the starting line-up, but also showed himself as the "boss" in midfield and stepped as Goalscorer for the 2-1 victory in appearance. This was followed by further missions under junior coach Howard Wilkinson for the U-18 and U-21 teams, before Kevin Keegan invited him in February 2000 for the first time for the friendly against Argentina in the squad of the senior team ; after the first training sessions with the "Three Lions", however, he had to leave early due to back problems. Gerrard made his debut the day after his 20th birthday, on May 31, 2000 in a 2-0 win over Ukraine at Wembley . Then he found his way into the squad for the EM 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands . He initially lived a “reserve existence” there and followed England's 3-2 defeat against Portugal from the bank. When Alan Shearer took the 1-0 lead in the important second group game against arch rivals from Germany in the 53rd minute, the moment had come. Keegan decided to save the result for the remaining time and replaced him eight minutes later for striker Michael Owen with the clear requirement to both disrupt the generic attacks and specifically to thwart the circles of Mehmet Scholl . The game ended 1-0 and Keegan planned with Gerrard for the decisive group game against Romania in the starting eleven. The project failed, however; Gerrard had to pass due to injury and the 3-2 bankruptcy without him meant the premature end for England in the final tournament.

When Keegan announced his resignation shortly afterwards in October 2000 after a 0-1 home defeat in the World Cup qualifying against Germany, Gerrard pleaded for an English coach, as he suspected that he would be more open to his game. That he was wrong with this assessment - as in the case of Houllier in Liverpool - quickly became apparent, because successor Sven-Göran Eriksson saw him as the central element in the team he had newly put together. The successes were not long in coming and about half a year after the first nomination for the friendly game against Spain on February 28, 2001 , a memorable appearance in Munich against Germany followed. An English team that played unleashed, especially in the second half, won 5-1 and Gerrard's first international goal with a long-range shot to 2-1 in stoppage time in the first half had provided the necessary psychological relief. England later qualified first in the group ahead of Germany for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea , but Gerrard did not participate because he had to undergo groin surgery on both sides to loosen muscles due to chronic complaints. Two years later, the 2004 European Championships followed in Portugal , where Gerrard was again a regular in the central midfield. In the first game against defending champions France he made a serious mistake when the score was 1-1 shortly before the final whistle when his back pass was intercepted by Thierry Henry , who could only be stopped by goalkeeper David James by foul; Zinédine Zidane converted the due penalty to make it 2-1. The defeat did not cause any lasting damage, because after certain victories against Switzerland (3: 0) - Gerrard had scored the goal for the final score - and Croatia (4: 2) the "Three Lions" reached the quarter-finals. Against hosts Portugal it looked like a victory for England for a long time; but when Gerrard left the pitch to make it 1-0 in the 82nd minute for Owen Hargreaves , he had to watch the equalizer and his team fail on penalties. Two years later Gerrard was also in the English squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . He scored one goal each against Trinidad & Tobago (2-0) and Sweden (2-2), but Portugal was the last stop for his team in a quarter-finals on penalties . Gerrard was one of three English players whose penalty was saved by Portuguese goalkeeper Ricardo .

Gerrard in a running duel with Franck Ribéry in the European Championship group game against France on June 11, 2012 (final score 1: 1)

Following the 2006 World Cup and the “Eriksson era”, he was appointed vice-captain behind John Terry by successor Steve McClaren and represented him in this role when England lost to Russia (1: 2) and Croatia (2: 3 ) in qualifying matches ) missed the final tournament of Euro 2008 in Switzerland and Austria . As a consequence, the Football Association decided to prematurely dissolve the contract with McClaren and use Fabio Capello as the new English national coach in December 2007 . Under Capello, Gerrard initially retained the captaincy before the Italian opted for Terry and later even promoted Rio Ferdinand as substitute captain. Reinforced, England qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . Gerrard personally took revenge on Croatia with two goals for a 5-1 win. At the World Cup finals he was suddenly again captain of the "Three Lions" after Terry had been removed from his position and Ferdinand was injured in the training camp. The fans' high expectations of the English team, which had emerged after the very successful qualification, were not fulfilled during the tournament, as the "Three Lions" first moved into the knockout round with two draws in the group stage and then as second in the group with the highest World Cup defeat in the last sixteen to Germany (1: 4) failed.

After successfully qualifying for the subsequent Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine , the new coach Roy Hodgson nominated him as captain in the 23-man squad for the finals. In this role he played all four English games and was named man of the game in the final group game against hosts Ukraine. Although Gerrard converted his attempt, England were eliminated in the round of 16 on penalties against Italy .

On November 14, 2012, he played his 100th international match in a 4-2 draw against Sweden .

After England's preliminary round at the 2014 World Cup , Gerrard announced his retirement from the national team on July 21.

Career as a coach

In January 2017 Gerrard became youth coach at Liverpool FC. For the 2017/18 season he took over as head coach of the U18s.

In the summer of 2018 Gerrard became the head coach of the Scottish first division club Glasgow Rangers . In his first season Gerrard was runner-up with the Rangers, the team then made it through the qualifying rounds in the Europa League , where they reached the sixteenth finals as second in the group. He then received a contract extension until 2024.

Private

Steven Gerrard has an older brother named Paul - not to be confused with the former Everton goalkeeper of the same name - and has been married to British model Alex Curran since 2007 . The couple have three daughters and one son.

He is the bearer of the MBE ( Member of the Order of the British Empire ), which Queen Elizabeth II awarded him on March 21, 2007 for his services to sport. Another honor and recognition of his sporting achievements was given to him in July 2008 by the Liverpool John Moores University .

In September 2006, Gerrard published his autobiography, written by the ghostwriter Henry Winter and voted Best Sports Book at the British Book Awards . Gerrard dedicated the book to Jon-Paul Gilhooley, his cousin and the youngest of the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster .

In December 2008, Gerrard was arrested after a fight in a bar. He had to spend the night in police custody and answer in court for involvement in a brawl and assault. However, the court acquitted him of the charge of bodily harm. However, charges of participating in a brawl were upheld; in July 2009 he was also acquitted of this charge by a jury at a Liverpool court.

His cousin is the professional soccer player Anthony Gerrard .
