Stephen "Steve" McClaren (born May 3, 1961 in Fulford , York ) is a former English football player and current coach .

Adolescence

McClaren attended Nunthorpe Grammar School, which is known for giving a high priority to active school sports. McClaren was also very athletic at the time, cycling 10 miles a day to his school and actively playing squash , emulating his very talented father there. Other sports McClaren played were rugby and tennis . However, he was able to celebrate his breakthrough in football when he made it to a youth selection in the county of Yorkshire . He then joined the youth department of the Hull City club in 1977 at the age of 16 .

Player career

During his playing career, the midfielder McClaren acted mostly in the lower professional leagues. After joining Hull City, he played for Derby County , on loan for Lincoln City and then for Bristol City and Oxford United until an injury in 1990 forced him to retire.

Coaching career

Starts as a reserve and assistant trainer

Shortly after hanging up his boots, McClaren began his coaching career with the Oxford United reserve team, where Jim Smith was the coach at the time . In 1995 he was promoted to assistant coach of the first team, then followed Smith in his move to Derby County and assisted this also with his new club. In December 1998 he accepted an offer from Manchester United , where he succeeded Brian Kidd as assistant coach to Sir Alex Ferguson . In the back series he did not lose a game with Manchester and then won the triple of the English championship, FA Cup and Champions League .

Middlesbrough FC

In the summer of 2001, Middlesbrough FC president Steve Gibson offered him the job of head coach. McClaren took on the task and reached the FA Cup semi-finals with his new team in the first season , but where he lost 1-0 to Arsenal FC . In 2004 he won with Middlesbrough after a final victory against the Bolton Wanderers at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff with the League Cup, the first trophy in the club's history and thus also qualified for the first time for a European club competition. He then signed internationally experienced players, for example Ray Parlor from Arsenal, and came with his team in the Premier League 2004/05 to seventh place in the table, which was the highest Premier League placement in the club's history and the renewed qualification for the UEFA Cup brought in. In the 2005/06 FA Cup , McClaren reached the cup semi-finals again with Middlesbrough FC and even reached the final in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup , in which they lost 4-0 to Sevilla FC in May 2006 .

English national team

In addition to his work as a club coach, McClaren was also Sven-Göran Eriksson's assistant in the English national team. He has been in this position since 2000, when Peter Taylor worked briefly as England coach on an interim basis.

On January 23, 2006, the English federation announced that Eriksson would no longer look after the English national team after the 2006 World Cup in Germany . McClaren then developed alongside Luiz Felipe Scolari , Martin O'Neill , Sam Allardyce and Alan Curbishley to one of the Football Association (FA) preferred successor candidates. After a lengthy selection process, as a result of which Scolari withdrew his interest, McClaren was appointed the new England coach on May 4, 2006. His four-year contract began on August 1, 2006.

McClaren's election was met with criticism and approval. While Alan Hansen criticized the length of the selection process and suggested that Middlesbrough FC's good performance in reaching the UEFA Cup final was the main factor in the personnel decision, other experts, including Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Trevor Brooking , supported the decision Decision of the FA.

After missing qualification for the European Football Championship in 2008 , the contract with McClaren was terminated on November 22, 2007. During his 15-month activity he did not succeed in forming the team into a unit. His inconsistent treatment of the former team captain David Beckham , whom he first sorted out and then brought back , was particularly criticized . McClaren was ridiculed as "McClown" in the end. After the early termination of the contract, McClaren is said to have received a severance payment of more than three million euros.

FC Twente

In the summer of 2008, McClaren took over the coaching position at the Dutch club FC Twente . There he took over from Fred Rutten an intact team that had occupied fourth place in the table in the 2007/08 season . McClaren was able to increase this success in the Eredivisie 2008/09 and ended up in second place behind AZ Alkmaar . In addition, the team reached the final of the KNVB Cup , but had to admit defeat on penalties against SC Heerenveen . The 2009/10 season started very well and McClaren's team took their place at the top of the table. She did not give up this place again in the championship finals and the coach led the club to its first championship title in the club's history. With a total of 86 points, the team had more than ever since the 3-point rule introduced in 1995. By then, the record was 69 points that McClaren got last year. After the end of the season, the Englishman was awarded the Rinus Michels Prize , an honor for the best coach of the year, for his performance . He was the first foreigner to receive this title.

VfL Wolfsburg

On May 11, 2010, McClaren signed a two-year contract with VfL Wolfsburg on July 1, making him the first English coach to coach a team from the 1st Bundesliga. With McClaren's arrival in Wolfsburg, the team also changed their image. Players like Christian Gentner , Jonathan Santana , Obafemi Martins and many other players left the club. The most notable newcomers were Cícero Santos , Arne Friedrich , Simon Kjær and Diego . With this changed squad, the club started the 2010/11 season with high expectations . By the winter break, however, McClaren was unable to meet this requirement and was criticized at an early stage. Finally, at Christmas, the team found themselves in 13th place, just four points ahead of the relegation place. On December 22nd, they were eliminated in the DFB Cup against the second division club Energie Cottbus . After just one win in the first four games of the second half of the season, the Englishman was given a leave of absence from the club's board on February 7, 2011. His assistant coach Pierre Littbarski took over for him for the time being .

Nottingham Forest

In the summer break of 2011 McClaren took over the coaching position at the English second division club Nottingham Forest . With the European Cup winners of the national champions of 1979 and 1980 , it should be his task to lead the club back into the first English league for the first time since the Premier League in 1998/99 . After ten games, of which Nottingham only won two, this engagement was also dissolved on October 2, 2011.

FC Twente for the second

In the winter break of 2011/12, FC Twente McClaren signed again. He followed the Dutchman Co Adriaanse as trainer and manager. His contract ran for two and a half years. After his team in the Eredivisie went six games without a win and dropped from the top of the table to fifth place, McClaren resigned on February 26, 2013 as coach.

Derby County

On September 30, 2013 McClaren was introduced as the new coach of the English second division club Derby County . With his team he reached the play-offs as third in the Football League Championship 2013/14 , but missed promotion to the Premier League due to a 0-1 defeat in the final against Queens Park Rangers .

When Derby missed the play-off spots of the Football League Championship on the last day of the season in the 2014/2015 season after the team had been on a promotion or play-off pitch for almost the entire season, Steve McClaren was on 25. Dismissed May 2015.

Newcastle United

In June 2015 he took over the coaching position at the first division club Newcastle United . The collaboration was ended on March 11, 2016. At that time, Newcastle finished penultimate in the Premier League 2015/16 with one point behind a non-relegation place.

Derby County

On October 12, 2016, the second division Derby County announced the renewed commitment of Steve McClaren. The ambitious club was only 20th in the table at the time and had therefore dismissed manager Nigel Pearson . Thanks to a series of victories in the meantime, McClaren led his team into the play-off ranks before his team's performance deteriorated significantly again and the envisaged promotion to the Premier League was a long way off. On March 12, 2017, Derby published his manager's re-firing.

Maccabi Tel Aviv

At the end of August 2017, McClaren became a coaching advisor at the Maccabi Tel Aviv club in Israel, which was trained by Jordi Cruyff , and he resigned from this position at the end of December 2017.

Queens Park Rangers

In May 2018, McClaren was introduced as the head coach of the second division side Queens Park Rangers . After he had only managed one win from 15 league games since the end of 2018, he was released on April 1, 2019.
