Nigel Graham Pearson (born August 21, 1963 in Nottingham ) is a former English football player and current coach .

Player career

Nigel Pearson made his debut on the 1st day of the Football League Second Division 1982/83 for the English second division club Shrewsbury Town . For the bottom of the table he scored one goal in 39 league games by the end of the season. During the 1983/84 season, the 20-year-old defender was seriously injured and, as a result, missed the entire subsequent season. After returning to the Second Division in 1985/86 , he spent two seasons as a regular player in the lower mid-table.

On October 16, 1987 Nigel Pearson moved to the first division club Sheffield Wednesday . With the team trained by Howard Wilkinson , he finished the Football League First Division 1987/88 in eleventh place. After a close relegation in the following season, the club rose in 1989/90 as third from bottom in the second division. In the new division , the team around team captain Pearson (39 league games / 6 hits) achieved direct promotion and increased this success with the title in the League Cup 1990/91 . Thanks to a goal from John Sheridan in the 37th minute, the underdog defeated clear favorites Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley . The return to the First Division in 1991/92 led the club to third place in the table. 1992/93 Sheffield Wednesday moved into the finals in both English Cup competitions and met Arsenal FC . Nigel Pearson missed both the 1: 2 defeat in the final of the League Cup 1992/93 , as well as the narrowly missed title in the FA Cup 1992/93 due to an injury.

At the beginning of the 1994/95 season , the second division FC Middlesbrough signed him . After winning the second division championship in the first season, he rose with his team in the Premier League 1996/97 back to the second division. In the 1996/97 FA Cup , Middlesbrough reached the final, but lost 2-0 to Chelsea . In his last season he reached the renewed promotion to the Premier League in 1997/98 .

Coaching career

Carlisle United and Southampton FC

His coaching career began Nigel Pearson on December 7, 1998 at the fourth division Carlisle United and achieved relegation with his team. After positions as coach of the second team or as assistant coach at Stoke City , West Bromwich Albion , the England U-21 national team and Newcastle United , he was introduced on February 18, 2008 as head coach of Southampton FC . With his new team he achieved relegation in the Football League Championship 2007/08 .

Leicester City and Hull City

After his contract expired at the end of the season he took over the coaching position at Leicester City on June 20, 2008 and led the club in Football League One in 2008/09 to win the third division championship. In 2009/10 the promoted team reached the play-offs in fifth place, but failed prematurely at Cardiff City .

Since the relationship with the team owner Milan Mandarić was disturbed, Pearson left the club after two successful years in Leicester and signed a contract with Hull City . With the Premier League relegated he only reached 11th place in the Football League Championship 2010/11 .

In the first half of the 2011/12 season Pearson ended his tenure in Kingston upon Hull and returned to Leicester City. The new Thai owner of the club had made extensive investments and dismissed the previous coach Sven-Göran Eriksson due to a false start. In the 2013/14 season Leicester City rose under his leadership as the table first. The club finished the league season on a safe 14th place. On June 30, 2015, Pearson was released. The Italian Claudio Ranieri was his successor for the new season .

Since 2016

In the summer of 2016, he became the new coach at Derby County . He signed a three-year contract. After the club found themselves in the lower third of the table during the first half of the EFL Championship 2016/17 instead of the advised promotion ranks, Derby announced the separation by mutual agreement on October 8, 2016.

In September 2017, Pearson took over the Belgian second division club Oud-Heverlee Löwen , where he was released again in February 2019. At the beginning of December 2019, after the dismissal of Quique Sánchez Flores , he took over the relegation-threatened first division club Watford . Two game days before the end of the season, Pearson was dismissed as the third Watford coach in the course of the season after a 3-1 loss to West Ham United in July 2020, at which the club was three points ahead of a relegation rank in 17th place.
