The Football League One 2008/09 was the fifth season of the English Football League One , at the same time the 17th season of the second highest division of the Football League after the introduction of the Premier League and 82nd third division season overall. Third division champions Leicester City and next rose the second-placed Peterborough United and after play-off successes against Milton Keynes Dons and Millwall FC, the sixth-placed Scunthorpe United in the Football League Championship .

For the three promoted teams in the following third division season 2009/10, the three second division clubs Norwich City , Southampton FC and Charlton Athletic, ranked in the table below, took their places. Northampton Town , Crewe Alexandra , Cheltenham Town and Hereford United had to relegate from Football League One . Instead of these four clubs, the fourth division champions FC Brentford , behind them Exeter City and Wycombe Wanderers and the play-off winners FC Gillingham took the vacant positions in the following season 2009/10 .
