The Football League Second Division 1992/93 was the first season of the Football League Second Division as only the third highest English football league and 66th third division season overall. Third division champions were Stoke City and the second-placed Bolton Wanderers as well as, after play-off successes against Swansea City and Port Vale , West Bromwich Albion also rose to the Football League First Division .

In the following third division season 1993/94, the three second division clubs Brentford FC , Cambridge United and Bristol Rovers, ranked in the table below, took the places for the three promoted teams . Preston North End , Mansfield Town , Wigan Athletic and Chester City had to relegate from the Second Division . Instead of these four clubs, the fourth division champions Cardiff City , behind them AFC Wrexham and FC Barnet and the play-off winners York City took the vacant positions in the following season 1993/94 .

From this season onwards, the number of goals scored, then the lower number of goals conceded, applies in the event of a tie.
