The Football League Second Division 1991/92 was the 89th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . Following the introduction of the Premier League in 1992, it was then replaced by the Football League First Division and continued to exist as the second division as the third highest division. The game was played from August 17, 1991 to May 2, 1992.

Ipswich Town became second division champions and second-placed Middlesbrough FC also rose directly to the new Premier League. In addition, the Blackburn Rovers prevailed in the play-off games against Derby County and in the final against Leicester City and thus became the third promoted team. From the first division in the following second division season 1992/93, the three in the table below Luton Town , Notts County and West Ham United took the free places. Plymouth Argyle , Brighton & Hove Albion and Port Vale had to relegate from the second to the third division . Instead of the three clubs, the third division winners FC Brentford and the Birmingham City and play-off winners Peterborough United, who were behind them, took the vacant positions in the following season 1992/93 .
