The Football League Second Division 1952/53 was the 50th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 23, 1952 and ended on May 1, 19543.

Sheffield United became second division champions and the second-placed Huddersfield Town also rose to the Football League First Division . For the two promoted teams in the following second division season 1953/54, the two first division clubs Stoke City and Derby County ranked in the table below . Southampton FC and Barnsley FC had to relegate from the Second Division , with Barnsley henceforth having to compete in the North Season Football League Third Division North and Southampton in the Football League Third Division South . Instead of the two clubs took the free positions in the following season 1953/54 Third Division North champion Oldham Athletic and from the Third Division South the winner Bristol Rovers .
