The Football League Second Division 1971/72 was the 69th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 14, 1971 and ended on May 2, 1972.

Second division champions were Norwich City and in addition, second-placed Birmingham City rose to the Football League First Division . For the two promoted teams in the following second division season 1972/73, the two first division clubs Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town ranked in the table below . Charlton Athletic and Watford FC had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . Instead of the two clubs, the third division winners Aston Villa and third division champions Brighton & Hove Albion took the vacant positions in the following season 1972/73 .
