The Football League Second Division 1948/49 was the 46th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 21, 1948 and ended on May 7, 1949.

Second division champions were Fulham FC and the second-placed West Bromwich Albion also rose to the Football League First Division . For the two promoted teams in the following second division season 1949/50, the two first division clubs Preston North End and Sheffield United, ranked in the table below, took the places. Nottingham Forest and Lincoln City had to relegate from the Second Division , with Lincoln henceforth having to compete in the North Season Football League Third Division North and Nottingham Forest in the Football League Third Division South . Instead of the two clubs in the following season 1949/50 Third Division North Champion Hull City and from the Third Division South the winner Swansea Town took the vacant positions.
