The Football League Second Division 1987/88 was the 85th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 15, 1987 and ended on May 7, 1988.

Second division champions were the Millwall FC and also rose second-placed Aston Villa and after play-off successes against Bradford City and the first division club Chelsea from the third-placed Middlesbrough FC to the Football League First Division . For the three promoted teams in the following second division season 1988/89 against the background of the league expansion from 23 to 24 teams in addition to Chelsea, the three first division clubs Portsmouth , Watford and Oxford United in the table below took the places. Reading FC and Huddersfield Town had to relegate directly from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . In addition, Sheffield United failed in the play-off round against third division clubs FC Walsall , Notts County and Bristol City in the semi-finals at Bristol. Walsall as the later winner took in the following season 1988/89 as well as the third division winner AFC Sunderland and the Brighton & Hove Albion ranked behind one of the vacant positions.
